When it comes to Hawaii, the most common destinations are Oahu or Maui. But the islands have more than that. Let’s explore new spots to refresh your experience in this tropical paradise. Here are things you must do when visiting the western Big Island Of Hawaii.
This is a gorgeous white sand beach stretching half a mile between lava points. It is also the most expansive beach on the Hawaii Big Island.
Sitting in the aridest area of the Big Island, Hapuna Beach boasts more bright summer days than any other. The beach gets only 10 inches of rain yearly. Its crystal clear water and minimal surf provide great water activities. You can try some common ones such as bodysurfing, swimming, etc.
Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation – Big Island Of Hawaii
This is one of the things to do in Hawaii you should never miss out on. Your trip here wouldn’t be perfect if skip visiting Kona’s highest-selling crop. The ideal soil and farming conditions give their coffee an excellent flavor.
In fact, there are plenty of Kona Coffee tours on the island. But Mountain Thunder’s award-winning coffee has always taken the cake. Coming to this site,
you’ll learn about the entire process of making coffee.
Also, the Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation is quite peaceful as it’s off the beaten track. You’ll have a chance to enjoy the scenic Hawaiian country road when driving up the mountainside to get to the site.
The plantation presents a free tour in 30 minutes. At the end of the tour, they’ll give you a cup of hand-crafted Kona Coffee.
Zip And Dip
Kohala Zip & Dip is a two-part activity of Hawaii Forest and Trail.
Visitors begin the journey going off-roading through private lands in an open-air military car. Then, they will get an educational trek along tunnels blasted and engraved from solid rock. The journey keeps going over a bridge and gets through hidden Kohala Waterfalls.
When returning, visitors go to Kohala Ziplines. This is where the ziplines are sustainably built straight into the trees. Tourists will fly from tree to tree through King Kamehameha’s family land holdings. Speed can be up to 45 MPH without going up or down stairs.
Spend A Night With Manta Rays – Big Island Of Hawaii
At dusk, the Mauna Kea Beach Resort shines floodlights into the sea to draw manta rays. This is a kind of plankton.
From the resort, you can catch a glimpse of the manta rays. They swim calmly among snorkelers. However, to enjoy the whole experience, we suggest you join James Wing’s Manta Ray Moonlight Swim. The tour gives you an opportunity to swim face to face with the manta rays.
Try it! This is one of the things to do in Hawaii that is worth your time!
The Mauna Lani Resort takes up over 3,000 acres on the Kohala Coast of the Hawaii Big Island.
Back in ancient times, this was the place where ancient Hawaiians built aquaculture ponds. It has seven ponds in total. And now, all of the ponds have been turned into Mauna Lani Resort.
Mauna Lani has tracks that are available to the public. From the tracks, you can see a prehistoric fishing village, petroglyphs, and ancient shelter caves.
Though the ponds and tracks are always open, we suggest going with Danny Akaka. He is a Hawaiian living encyclopedia as well as a cultural historian of the resort. Danny offers a free, guided walking tour of the ponds every Saturday. He also accomplishes an evening of storytelling every full moon. This special event’s purpose is to maintain the conventional folk art of Hawaiian storytelling. And of course, it’s available for people of all ages.
