The Mauna Lani Resort takes up over 3,000 acres on the Kohala Coast of the Hawaii Big Island.
Back in ancient times, this was the place where ancient Hawaiians built aquaculture ponds. It has seven ponds in total. And now, all of the ponds have been turned into Mauna Lani Resort.
Mauna Lani has tracks that are available to the public. From the tracks, you can see a prehistoric fishing village, petroglyphs, and ancient shelter caves.
Though the ponds and tracks are always open, we suggest going with Danny Akaka. He is a Hawaiian living encyclopedia as well as a cultural historian of the resort. Danny offers a free, guided walking tour of the ponds every Saturday. He also accomplishes an evening of storytelling every full moon.
