To maintain 175 miles of the shoreline on the west of Hawaii’s Big Island, people had to build Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail. This construction started in 2000 and extended from Kohala to Puna.

This trail is one of 19 national historic trails in the entire United States. People chose this region due to its crucial cultural and geological gems. To be more precise, it includes around 200 ahupua’a land sections and zones of the local Hawaiian settlements.
