1. About Lake Alexandrina
About 100 kilometers (62 miles) to the southeast of Adelaide is where you’ll find the coastal freshwater lake known as Lake Alexandrina. This lake is situated between the Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island districts of South Australia, as well as the Murray and Mallee regions.
The lake is connected to the much smaller Lake Albert, which together are referred to as the Lower Lakes. To the southeast of the lake is a coastal lagoon known as The Coorong, and the lake eventually empties into the Great Australian Bight through a short and narrow hole known as Murray Mouth.
2. The story behind the name Alexandrina
Aboriginal naming
It was said that Aboriginal people who had a connection to the lake knew it by names such as Mungkuli, Parnka, and Kayinga. These names are from the Aboriginal language.
European naming
The early settlers from England gave the lake her name in honor of Princess Alexandrina, who was the niece of King William IV of Great Britain and Ireland and was destined to succeed him. There was some consideration given to altering the name of the lake to Lake Victoria once the princess was crowned queen and given the name Victoria, but ultimately the decision was made not to make the change.
According to the version of Aboriginal mythology known as Dreamtime, the lake was home to a monstrous creature known as the Muldjewangk.
3. Wildlife at Lake Alexandrina
There are lizards and snakes along the coastline, in addition to turtles, and the lake itself is home to turtles. There are many different kinds of moths, butterflies, and beetles among the insect species. In addition, there are dragonflies (Coleoptera). The lake is home to a variety of fish species, one of which is the invasive European carp.
Even though the soils around the lake contain a relatively low level of organic carbon, they are nonetheless capable of producing high-quality barley and vegetables. There are regions around Lake Albert and Lake Alexandrina that feature soils that do not wet easily. These locations are located near the southeastern boundaries of Lake Albert.
The lake provides a breeding ground for a great number of different species of waterbirds, including migratory waders and shorebirds that normally live in northern Asia and Alaska.
The lake is home to a wide variety of wildlife. That including the critically endangered orange-bellied parrot, the endangered Australasian bittern, the vulnerable fairy tern, and over one percent of the world’s population of Cape Barren geese, Australian shelducks, great cormorants, and sharp-tailed sandpipers. All of these species are in danger of extinction.
