Josephine Falls: The Best Natural Swimming Pool In Cairns

One of Australia‘s most stunning waterfalls, Josephine Falls, may be found in the areas surrounding Cairns in Tropical North Queensland (QLD). This area’s flowing water plunges into waters that are crystal clear, bordered by sandy beaches, and flanked by dense vegetation.

1. Josephine Falls: The ideal place to relax in Cairns

Rains pouring on Queensland’s highest peak, Bartle Frere, which towers above this well-liked picnic location in Wooroonooran National Park, create the picturesque cascade known as Josephine Falls. It is the ideal location for guests to unwind. It is also distinguished by a tranquil swimming hole and lovely surroundings.

On the southeast side of Bartle Frere’s summit, Josephine Creek begins as a slow trickle. By the time it flows 7.5 kilometers to Josephine Falls‘ smooth granite rocks, it is a raging torrent that will leave you gasping for air.

With day trip companies, Josephine Falls is a terrific site to spend the entire day, half the day, or just a quick visit and swim. With the help of the public amenities, you can enjoy a day of relaxation with your family and friends in this lovely rainforest environment while setting up a barbecue and picnic in the specially constructed facilities.

Bushwalking or hiking

If you’re an adventurous person who enjoys bushwalking or you’re a serious hiker, you might choose to select from a 1.2 km walk to the top waterfalls, a 10 km journey to Broken Nose from Bartle Frere, or a 15 km (one-way) hike up to the Atherton Tablelands from Bartle Frere.

Unless you are really athletic and have two extra days available, we do not advise the latter 15 km climb in case you get caught off guard or the weather forces you to spend the night on the summit.

Enjoy the view

A year-round favorite among Cairns residents, Josephine Falls, is a must-visit location for both nature enthusiasts and travelers. You can hear the backpackers discussing their day’s experience on the granite rock slides, the deep crystal clear rock pools, and the utter magnificence of the location while you mingle in the clubs and pubs around Cairns city.

See wild animals and remember to be careful with them

Keep an eye out where you are walking since snakes may lay across the paths, and the sun themselves are the most deadly Australian wildlife you might encounter at Josephine Falls if you are afraid of it.

Besides, as they flit from the wildflowers to the rainforest trees and plants, this area of rainforest is widely renowned for the wide diversity of butterflies and gorgeous tropical birds.

Picnics and barbecues

In the lush greenery of the nearby rainforest, there is also a dedicated space set aside for picnics and barbecues. Besides, the amenities allow you to dine, drink and unwind for the entire day.

3. Is Swimming at Josephine Falls Safe?

Yes, swimming at Josephine Falls is safe, but you must adhere to the posted directions and avoid making foolish decisions.

Besides, visitors are not permitted to access the top area of the waterfalls for safety reasons. It might be hazardous!

As there might be submerged rocks that have migrated throughout the flood seasons, we advise against diving or jumping into the water. The waters may unexpectedly rise during the flood season, leaving you stuck on the riverbank or even in the middle of the river. If the water’s color changes, get out of the water right away since this means water is moving down the mountain.

Like anything you do in the great outdoors, common sense must always rule, and you obviously need to keep a watch on your kids.

4. Do crocodiles exist near Josephine waterfall?

The freshwaters of Josephine Falls and the nearby swimming holes don’t contain any crocodiles. Crocodiles, however, frequently stray inland and can be seen in brackish waters closer to the sea.

5. Does the waterfall have public transportation options?

No, there are no public transportation options that go from Cairns, Port Douglas, or Mission Beach to Josephine Falls.

6. Tips for visiting Josephine Falls

Be sure to read these helpful hints before you leave!

  • This waterfall may get very popular, especially on the weekends, so come early to avoid the crowds.
  • Cheap vehicle rentals are a must because there is no better way to see the Far North than on your own, even though Cairns excursions are fantastic!
  • There are coin-operated BBQs close to the parking lot, so pack a lunch.
  • Or, visit Babinda Bakery, one of Australia’s top bakeries, in my opinion.
  • Try out the slide; it’s incredibly safe and enjoyable, especially for kids.
  • The top pool is not for swimming; there are signs there for a reason.
  • Please take your trash with you and remember to leave no trace!

7. Getting to Josephine Falls

The Mulgrave Road, which departs from Cairns City and travels west before turning south toward Townsville, soon adopts the moniker Bruce Highway. On some road maps and in-car navigation systems, the Bruce Highway—a section of the National Highway—is also referred to as Highway 1.

Besides, as you travel about 75 km from Cairns to the small country village of Mirriwinni, located just south of Babinda, take in the beauty. Follow the instructions for around 8 kilometers to Josephine Falls after taking the exit for Mount Bartle Frere, the tallest mountain in Queensland.

A particularly lovely 700-meter jungle walk that can accommodate wheelchairs and prams leads from the roomy parking lot to the waterfalls, viewing platforms, and swimming area.
