Don’t come to my waterhole! Elephants chase giraffes out of their territory

An agitated elephant startled a bunch of giraffes in Botswana when they sought to share his water source.

The giraffes were trying to cool off in the water when they were startled by an elephant calf stampeding up behind them.

Janet Kleyn, 52, a wildlife photographer, recorded the stunning images at Mashatu Game Reserve.

‘As soon as the elephants got through the woods and saw the giraffes at the water, this juvenile elephant started trumpeting and running at them,’ Janet added.

‘In general, elephants dislike other animals sharing their area at a watering hole and will often scare them away.

‘The kids in particular like to chase off other animals; most of the time it is not serious, but an animal may be harmed – in this case, all the giraffes simply fled away.’
