The obscure hamlet of Kumeu might not be on your list of things to do when visiting Auckland, but this wine-growing region has the ideal balance of city energy and rural charm. There are many interesting activities to do in Kumeu, including wine tastings, plate experiences, and horseback riding along sandy beaches.
1. Go to a winery
It should come as no surprise that Kumeu is home to Auckland’s oldest winery, given the region’s reputation for producing fine wine. A variety of Pinot Gris, Pinotage, and Chardonnay are available at the Soljans Estate Winery. There is also an on-site cafe where you may discover the ideal meal pairing.
While waiting, you can have a conversation with the producers at Kerr Farm Wine about how they grow grapes like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc. Visit Kumeu River Winery if you enjoy Chardonnay; there, you can see 30 hectares of the vineyard and buy the ideal bottle to take on the road with you. 2. Have a drink at New Zealand’s oldest Riverside Tavern
The Riverhead has served as a gathering place and snack bar for the past 160 years. Due to the long history of travelers, this inn is home to numerous stories. Eat in this informal atmosphere while creating your own memories against a 100-year-old oak tree backdrop. Enjoy a distinct seasonal menu made up of products that are locally obtained and used to make a variety of meals, such as exquisite steaks and excellent pig bellies.
3. A daylong hike
The Te Henga Walkway is one of many enjoyable Kumeu hikes, and it comes highly recommended. Between Muriwai and Bethells Beach, a seven-hour roundtrip journey, magnificent vistas of the west coast’s sweeping sand dunes and green lagoons can be enjoyed.
The opportunity to see some local wildlife, such as dolphins and fur seals, is another benefit of this stroll. Check the DOC website for updates on the track’s safety before you set out, and be aware that there are some steep sections.
4. Take a quick, beautiful walk
Try one of the nearby shorter hikes if seven hours of hiking doesn’t sound like fun to you. The Mokoroa Falls may be reached from Kumeu in around 20 minutes. The 1.5-kilometer track that leads to these 11-meter-high falls takes around 40 minutes to complete. As you go along the Mokoroa Stream, take in the views and sounds of the local wilderness.
Check to see if you can see the top of Hoheria Falls when you get to the viewing platform. For better views of these sister waterfalls, you can descend the wooden stairway and cross the stream if the water level is low enough.
5. A Treetop Journey
Tree Adventures, which offers a variety of courses to suit all confidence and skill levels, is located fifteen minutes from Kumeu. Challenge your limitations at up to 14 meters above the ground as you put your talents to the test in “Tarzan’s Test.”
Before gliding down the park’s biggest flying fox, try swings, hangers, and tree surfing. Fear not if you’re afraid of heights. While “Monkey’n About” offers a variety of enjoyable activities at a considerably lower height than the expert courses, “Tree Huggin'” is only two to three meters above the ground and is perfect for kids and beginners of all ages.
It’s simple to spend an hour or two at this adventure park, but there isn’t a cafe there, so bring food to eat at one of the picnic sites. While you’re here, hire a $10 canopy and try your hand at building your own shelter.
6. In Muriwai Beach, unwind
To enjoy the black sand beaches of the powerful west coast, take a fifteen-minute drive southwest of Kumeu. Visit Muriwai beach for attractions, including cliff-top treks and gannet colonies if you’re seeking things to do.
This area’s 60 kilometers of black sand beach is ideal for a stroll along the shore. This is a fantastic place to go surfing as well. Word of caution: the going may get fairly harsh, so experienced surfers should avoid it.
