6 Best Camping Places on North Island, New Zealand

The best places to unwind and enter a true vacation mode are campgrounds and RV parks. The day is yours once you’ve located your plot and set up your mobile house. It’s the ideal recipe for a carefree vacation. These are the campgrounds on the North Island where you should set up shop on your upcoming road trip. Look into these RV-friendly campsites in stunningly beautiful North Island communities.

1. Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park

This campground or vacation park is situated in the thick of things. The main beach and Mount Maunganui are bustling with east coast admirers. Surfers, swimmers, pedestrians, and other people can be seen here. This location is truly “beachfront.” The Mount Maunganui Summit hike, a magnificent 40-minute hike with spectacular views of the campground and beyond, is also just nearby.

2. Waipatiki Beach, Hawkes Bay

A family would frequent a campground like this one on the North Island year after year. In addition to being tucked away in a quiet beach area, there is plenty of room for activities and other things to keep everyone entertained.

The beach offers excellent swimming opportunities, and kids can paddle in the nearby stream. Park your RV, camper, or motorhome and take in the breathtaking east coast. Napier is around a 30-minute drive from Waipatiki Beach Holiday Park. This is the pinnacle of beachfront camping.

3. Maitai Bay Campsite

There is no campground on the North Island more unique than Matai Bay. Simple and uncomplicated camping is offered, including unpowered sites and cold showers. But the protected bay, with its crystal-clear waters and pohutukawa trees, is absolutely stunning. A typical North Island location that is suitable for boaters, families, and everyone in between. This location is 4.5 hours north of Orewa on the Karikari Peninsula in Northland.

4. Tāwharanui Regional Park

On the Twharanui Peninsula, close to Matakana and Omaha, is Tāwharanui Regional Park. You can reach paradise by car from Auckland in one hour and fifteen minutes. This area is ideal for campervan travel because it has white sand and a lot of shoreline. On the northeastern coast, the Tāwharanui campground is hidden among sand dunes.

There is a sizable camping area there, and you may traverse the sand dunes to get to the beach. For tent camping, there are specific places, and for vehicle-based camping, there are distinct zones. At the Tāwharanui campground, the owners of the caravan you rent, such as the Kiwi Caravan Experience, will set it all up for you. To get to the campground for RVs, be careful to follow the directions.

5. Paekakariki Holiday Park, Kapiti Coast

Small coastal townships make the ideal vacation spot, particularly when they’re close to a big city like this one! Wellington City is 45 minutes away by car from Paekakariki. Take to the road for a few days along the Kapiti Coast by renting a campervan that suits your needs. Barbecues, WiFi, a community kitchen, and laundry facilities are all available at the Paekakariki Holiday Park.

There are powered sites and dump stations available for those traveling in RVs, so you have access to everything you need. While you’re in the area, don’t forget to check out the escarpment track as well.

6. Camp Waipu Cove, Waipu

Bream Bay’s Camp Waipu Cove is tucked away in a gorgeous location. This campground is in a beachside camping paradise north of Auckland. A playground, trees for seclusion and shade, and the ocean are all nearby.
