Let’s visit the wonderful floating Lantern Festival in Hawai and find out what is interesting about it!

Where Does The Festival Take Place? – Floating Lantern Festival In Hawaii

The stunning Floating Lantern Festival occurs on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii Island. The purpose of the festival is to commemorate beloved people who have passed. This annual celebration brings together thousands of locals and tourists.

The fascinating celebration emanates from a convention of “lantern offerings on water” of Japanese.

Hundreds of paper lanterns are put afloat in Pauoa Bay at dusk during the Floating Lantern Festival on the Big Island. It creates a stirring and dazzling scene. The glow of lanterns slowly fades in the night to commemorate forebears that have gone.

When Does It Occur?

After 3 years of postponing because of the pandemic, the carnival will come back this month. Like prior years, the festival is held by Fairmont Orchid in collaboration with North Hawaiʻi Hospice. The event is free for people of all ages.

The event is scheduled to take place on the 28th of August, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Pauoa Bay.

The Meaningful Festival – Floating Lantern Festival In Hawaii

As we mentioned above, the release of floating lanterns into the sea is a ceremonial way to praise beloved ones who’ve died. The meaning of this event is on a whole new level, especially after everything people encountered in the past few years.

Besides the paper lantern’s release, there are other interesting activities you can enjoy. For example, the unique performances of “hula”, Taiko drummers, Hawaiian chants, etc. It will offer you an unforgettable evening.

For the Japanese, this Lantern Festival is an important event. In the August of every year, they float lanterns in the river. Besides honoring their ancestors, the festival also marks the end of Obon extravaganzas. This is a tradition of Buddhists, for your information.

Shinnyo Lantern Floating Ceremony In Oahu

Not only Asian countries, but others around the world also use lanterns to express hope, peace, and healing. Traditions such as the Floating Lantern Festival exceed religious, cultural, and ethnic borders by gathering people together.

The Shinnyo Lantern Floating Ceremony that takes place in Oahu is one of the biggest commemoration ceremonies in the nation. In 2019, nearly 50,000 visitors came to Ala Moana Regional Park to take part in the festival.

Unfortunately, this year, the Oʻahu event was only available online. But since you know about this meaningful activity, you should try it in the future.
