The Top 10 Universities in Canada 2021

These are the top 10 universities in Canada, as assessed by the QS World University Rankings® in 2021. The list is ranked based on academic English and employers, research impact and more.

University of Toronto – Top Universities in Canada


Again this year, the top university in Canada is the University of Toronto at number 25 worldwide. The university has risen four places in this year’s rankings and earns high scores on most indicators, especially for academic reputation, where it ranks 15th worldwide.

The University of Toronto, founded in 1827, is the oldest and largest university in the province of Ontario and the leading public research institute in Canada. The university is also a world leader in biomedical research and has the third largest library system in North America, behind only Harvard and Yale. Toronto is Canada’s largest university with more than 70,000 students studying from all over the world.

McGill University


Located in Montreal, McGill University remains in second place in Canada this year, climbing four spots in the rankings to 31. McGill University has 12 Nobel Laurates and 145 Rhodes Scholars among its alumni faculty members as well as the current Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau.

McGill University, dubbed the “Havard” of Canada, is among the oldest universities in Canada. The university consists of 11 faculties and 11 professional schools, which offer more than 300 study programs to nearly 39,500 students. McGill University is often referred to as “Canada’s most international university” because it welcomes students from all over the world and has more than 250,000 alumni globally.

University of British Columbia


In the top three, we have the University of British Columbia ranked third in Canada and 45th globally, having risen six places this year. Ranked 28th in the world in the academic reputation index, the University of British Columbia aims to embrace innovation and challenge the status quo.

University of Montreal – Top Universities in Canada

This year, overtaking the University of Alberta for fourth place in Canada is the University of Montréal. A French public research university in Montreal was founded in 1878 and has over 67,350 students, including 10,000 international students.

Montreal is located on the northern slopes of the Mount Royal range – a prominent and attractive place with a red maple leaf forest with bold Canadian characteristics. This place is considered a definitive study and research environment for many students. There are 16 majors and 27 medical institutions, and 02 affiliated schools. University of Alberta


In 119th place is the University of Alberta, down six locations this year. The University of Alberta is home to 40,000 students and four campuses. It earned the highest score in the international faculty index.

McMaster University

After falling four places in this year’s rankings, McMaster University occupies the 144th place in the world university rankings. The International Faculty Index is where McMaster University earns the highest-ranking, ranking 83rd globally. The university is located in Hamilton, Ontario and is known for its prestigious medical school.

University of Waterloo – Top Universities in Canada


Up to seven places in the world rankings this year but still in seventh place in Canada, is the University of Waterloo. The University of Waterloo ranks 166th in the world rankings in 2021, performing well in the employer reputation index, ranking 85th worldwide.

Waterloo has been ranked “most innovative” in Canada for 25 consecutive years. The school combines learning with paid internship programs. The study program at the University of Waterloo focuses on practical knowledge and practical experience from training cooperation programs, professional experience, and work experience abroad that only students of the University of Waterloo just got.

Western University

Western University climbs eight places in this year’s world university rankings to rank 203. One of Canada’s leading research universities, Western University, founded in 1878 and has more than 38,000 students from 121 countries. The university performs well in citations per faculty and employer reputation metrics.

As a member of the U15 group, which includes Canada’s outstanding research-intensive universities, Western is ranked among the fastest-growing Canadian institutions for scientific research.

Queen’s University


Located in Kingston, Ontario, Queen’s University ranks 9th in Canada this year, having dropped seven places in the world rankings to 246th. This university performs exceptionally well in the employer reputation index, ranking 99th worldwide.

With over 24,000 students, 91% of Queen’s University graduates are employed within six months of graduating.

University of Calgary – Top Universities in Canada

Despite falling 13 places this year, the University of Calgary is still in the top 10 in Canada at 9th overall. The university ranks 246th globally and earns the highest score in the international faculty index, ranking 212th in the world.
