The Most Famous Cities Make a Great New Zealand!

New Zealand is recognized more for its nature than its cities, yet some are worth exploring. Moreover, three-quarters of New Zealand’s 4.8 million people live on the North Island. Here are The Most Famous Cities Make a Great New Zealand!

Wellington

Wellington is New Zealand’s capital and second-largest city, with a population of 420,000. New Zealand had numerous early means. Wellington was chosen since it’s easily accessible from the South Island and the rest of the North Island.

Wellington is both bureaucratic and aesthetic. Wellington visitors shouldn’t miss Te Papa Tongarewa. When the sun comes out, walk the Cuban Mall and Oriental Parade to get a feel for Wellington’s mood.

Wellington’s topography and geography make it windy. Anxious flyers may find Wellington scary. If it’s windy, head indoors; if not, explore Mount Victoria Lookout.

Dunedin – Famous Cities in New Zealand

If you can only visit one South Island city, choose Dunedin. Dunedin, the South Island’s second-largest city (120,000 people), with Scottish-inspired colonial architecture and a significant university. Dunedin is Scots Gaelic for Edinburgh, and the town is planned after the Scottish capital.

Dunedin, at the southernmost tip of the South Island, is an excellent base for exploring the Catlins and Otago Peninsula, home to penguins, albatrosses, and seals. Dunedin has a considerable student population, which gives it a lot of energy (and buzzing nightlife). New Zealanders love Dunedin’s fashion and music.

Christchurch

The South Island’s largest city (population 400,000) boasts the country’s second busiest airport. Visitors fly to Christchurch and explore the South Island.

In 2010 and 2011, earthquakes devastated Christchurch, including the Christchurch Church. The Canterbury Earthquake National Monument on the River Avon in the city’s core is a must-see.

Christchurch is adjacent to Banks Peninsula, which offers recreational and animal viewing options.

Hawke Bay, on the North Island’s east coast, is home to Napier and Hastings (130,000 people). Hawke’s Bay is New Zealand’s top wine-producing region, therefore great dining is plentiful.

Napier’s Art Deco architecture is another highlight. In 1931, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Hawke’s Bay, destroying communities and killing more than 250 people. Many buildings were reconstructed in Art Deco style when it was popular. Napier’s Art Deco tours are popular.
