Haleakala National Park – Places To Camp In Maui

This national park offers good zones to camp. Some are easy to approach, and some require more effort to reach.

The most common spots when it comes to camping in Haleakala park are Kipahulu and Hosmer Grove.

Kipahulu is about 10 minutes away from the well-known pools of Oheo. This spot is wonderful for swimming and hiking. And just like other places in Hawaii, it’s insanely gorgeous. It’s only about a 4-mile loop track on Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls.

Hosmer Grove is outside the campsite. You will see a stunning half-mile self-guided nature track here.

Both sites above have conveniences such as barbecue grills, picnic tables, and pit bathrooms. The parking fee here is about 15 dollars for 3 days. Camping in the above sites is free. But remember to plan accordingly since the park doesn’t provide you with gas or food.

If you want to try real wilderness camping, let’s head to Paliku and Holua campsites. These sites are a little bit more challenging since you have to hike to reach the places. Either Paliku or Holua is only accessible for about 25 people. So, first come, first serve.

Conveniences here are just basic as well. You should prepare beforehand in order to enjoy the camping to its fullest.

Camp Keanae

Along the Road to Hana is a campground run by the YMCA. This place has a stunning view of the rocky Keanae Peninsula. It takes you only a short walk to get to the old Hawaiian village and Keanae Arboretum. The sight here is quite peaceful with taro plots and an antique church built in 1856.

You can rent tent space or bunk beds at the cabin for $25 per person per night. Or else, you can reside in one of two fully-furnished cottages with sea views for $165 a night.

This campsite offers RV and Van parking. Other facilities you can use on the YMCA premises such as two bathhouses with hot showers, a swimming pool, a fitness center, a fire pit, and an ice machine.

We suggest you rent a 4WD car so you can get over the streams and bumpy dirt roads and on your way to this place.

This campground is 6,500 feet above sea level and it’s full of towering trees. It is also home to some of Maui’s best trails.

You should prepare a warm sleeping bag and an extra-warm jacket because the temperature here is quite low. Remember to book in advance to have a place to rest before arriving. The price of a rented cabin is about $90 a night. The campsite will not provide you with drinking water, instead, they have picnic tables and restrooms.

Camp Olowalu

This is one of the finest privately-owned campsites in Maui. It is clean and comfortable and is located in the highest-rated zones on the island. The conveniences are surely better than at public campsites. Equipment rentals for activities such as kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or snorkeling are always available.

This camping spot offers beachside tent sites and places to camp your RV or car as well. So, if you’re coming with your kids, this might be an ideal option.
