The Eastern Railway used Lake Leschenaultia, a man-made lake, as its primary water source in the early 1900s. It has been used as a recreational area since 1949 and has grown over time as tastes have changed. Many residents learned to swim in this area because there were no public swimming pools in the area until the 1960s.

2. History of Lake

Lake Leschenaultia, pronounced layk leh-shuh-nol-tee-uh, is a man-made body of water that was built about 1897 or 1898 as a railway reservoir to provide water for steam locomotives stopping at Chidlow’s Well Station on the Eastern Railway.

The lake first attracted anglers in 1907 as a result of the abundance of Redfin Perch there.

Due to the pine trees, which were planted to improve water quality but actually increased salt, the water in 1930 became unfit for steam locomotives.

Around 1933, the Greenmount Road Board purchased the lake, and ever since, it has been used for recreation (except for 1941 to 1947, when the reservoir was set aside for possible wartime use).

The blue Leschenaultia flower is the source of the name, as it was thought that the lake’s color resembled the flower.

If you’re walking, try to stay on the broader paths and be wary of bikers because some of the new mountain bike tracks to the west of the lake are single trails. Make sure to store the fishing equipment in the garage because there is a no-fishing rule at the lake.
