Lake Argyle
A reservoir that is so large you would mistake it for an inland sea. The lake, which is nearly 18 times the size of Sydney Harbour, is the second-largest artificial lake in Australia. Lake Argyle, which became officially open in 1972 after the Ord River Dam was built, is the ideal site to spend the day exploring the area on a boat ride or at your own speed.
It is home to freshwater crocodiles, native fish, rock wallabies, and a wide variety of birds. A magnificent infinity pool with a lake view is nearby at the neighboring Lake Argyle Resort. It ranks among the most popular swimming spots in all of Western Australia.

One of the greatest ways to visit the lake is by boat. In the dry season, Lake Argyle Cruises offers daily boat trips as well as sunset cruises where guests may take a cooling dip in the lake, watch the sun go down, and have a drink or two.
Play water sports
The lake’s edge is home to some really adorable rock wallabies, but if you’re feeling more energetic, you can also rent SUPs, kayaks, and canoes. To explore the lake’s depths or observe the ruins of the old residence, avid divers can join a Lake Argyle snorkeling or scuba diving excursion.
See bird-watching
With over 240 different species of birds documented surrounding the lake and thousands of freshwater crocodiles that call it home, Lake Argyle is also well renowned for its fauna. During the dry season, regular bird-viewing cruises are offered.

Bring your fishing gear, as the lake is also the habitat of several native fish.
Swim in a pool that gives breathtaking views of the lake
But the infinity pool at Lake Argyle Resort & Caravan Park, which gives breathtaking views of the lake (you’ve been warned, the water feels extremely cold in the dry season! ), has to be one of the most famous photos (and locations) of Lake Argyle. To use the pool and other facilities without staying at the caravan park, you can pay $10 for a day pass. Watching the last of the golden light from the infinity pool is the place to be if you’re not taking in the sunset from the lake itself. The resort and caravan park offers a variety of lodging options, as well as boat trips, sunset cruises, beautiful flights, and an experience using a gourmet camp oven.

Visit the historic Durack homestead museum
Visit the historic Durack homestead, which was painstakingly moved before the lake was filled from its original location on Argyle Downs Station in 1895. Currently a museum, the homestead is open every day from April to September.
Hike in walking trails
If you have more energy, try the network of bushwalking trails or the mountain bike trail and take your time taking in Lake Argyle’s beauty and tranquility. A mountain bike track is close by, and several walking trails let you take in the breathtaking vistas of this historic landscape.
What to avoid
Freshwater crocodiles may live in the lake, but they are the gentler variety that is usually harmless (unless provoked) and safer to swim with. But if you’re concerned, stay away from the lake’s shore and swim in the deeper parts of the lake where there are probably fewer crocodiles. Be mindful of all the local creatures.
You’re in deep, fresh water and far from help; know your swimming limits, and don’t take any chances.
Carry lots of water with you, and avoid hiking in the heat of the day if you’re on one of the walks.
A few things to note
- Lake Argyle can be reached by 2WD on a well-sealed road.
- All year long, tours are provided, as well as lodging.
- A cool swim at the end of a hot day would be ideal in the water, typically around 30 degrees (but it can go as low as 21 degrees in the cooler months of June and July).
- An annual swimming tournament takes place at the lake in May.
