The pristine blue Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, which includes the beautiful tropical rainforest surrounding Lake Eacham, was established in 1979. The lake is also a maar or volcanic crater formed by two enormous explosions of superheated groundwater thousands of years ago. Besides, the forest has been formed by variations in soil type, drainage, or previous disturbances, and many rainforest communities can be seen near the lake.

One thousand eight hundred eighty-six survey plans divided the lake into farming sections. By 1888, the lake and a narrow strip of shoreline rainforest were declared “scenic reserves.” The Lake was also a picturesque reserve from 1888 to 1936, featuring boats, boating, a guest lodge, speed boats, and waterskiing.

Additionally, UNESCO proclaimed the Wet Tropics of Queensland a World Heritage Site in 1988, protecting 14 locations, including 505 ha at Lake Eacham.

Traveling north from Cairns, take Gillies Range Road for about 68 kilometers before turning left into Lake Barrine Road and then left onto Lakes Drive. As an alternative, travel along Gillies Range Road for about 4 km from Yungaburra settlement, then turn right onto Lake Barrine Road, then left onto Lakes Drive.
