The Zundert Flower Parade features massive floats decorated with flowers. The parade takes place on the first Sunday of September through the streets of Zundert. It’s a race to see who can make the most beautiful dahlia-decorated float. The winner is the one who is asked to stop by the jury. The scale models are presented in large tents in June, signaling the start of the building procedure. Dahlias are harvested several weeks before the parade and are attached to the floats in the final week. The floats in Zundert are an average of 62 feet long and 30 feet high, so this is a massive task. They are displayed the day after the parade, followed by a feast. The floats are demolished a day later. In November, there is a photo exhibition, and in January, the winning hamlet receives the Banner of Honour.

The parade’s core values are unity, creativity, and competition. Children are born into the Flower Parade in Zundert. They participate in the Children’s Parade from a young age.

The Zundert Flower Parade dates back to 1936 when a group of dignitaries wanted to revitalize the Orange festivities. Queen Wilhelmina was born on August 31st. On September 8, 1936, the first flower parade passed through the streets of Zundert, and it was a huge success with the locals. The parades were modest in the early years. After WWII, the flower parade was given a prominent place in Zundert’s social life. The geographically defined hamlets have been participating since 1946. The flower parade drew tens of thousands of people in the 1950s and 1960s, and the floats became more artistic, beautiful, and large. The organization maintained close ties with the Breda art school Sint Joost. However, the floats grew so large that the organization decided to limit the size of a float.

Since the 1980s, more and more information about the parade and its history has been documented on paper and on film. Six books about the parade have already been published since 1981. Furthermore, many hamlets published documents detailing their own parade history. Since 1996, the parade magazine Corsief has been published, detailing the Flower Parade’s recent history.
