10 Amazing Trails Around Lake Taupo For Bikers

The cycling routes around New Zealand’s biggest lake are the best at burning off calories in the thighs! You may rent bikes there, use the bike shuttles, and find inexpensive lodging in Taupo. 1. Great Lake Trail

The largest lake on New Zealand’s western shores by bicycle! You can see Tongariro National Park and Lake Taupo from this grade two trail. You may either plan the trip on your own or sign up for a guided tour with Taupo Kayaking Experiences through Viator and TripAdvisor.

Distance: 71 km (44 miles) away, 2-3 days.

2. Craters Mountain Bike Park

In this specially designed park, mountain bikers may satisfy their need for challenging trails through the forest. Also, there are paths for all skill levels. A Bike Taupo membership is required in order to use the park; you can obtain one from a nearby bike shop or i-SITE.

The paths are 50 kilometers (31 miles) long.

3. Tongariro River Trail

A grade two-loop track along both sides of the Tongariro River, this trail travels through native vegetation with views into the crystal clear water. In Turangi, you may find the Tongariro River Trail.

Distance: 15 kilometers (9 miles).

4. Timber Trail

Take a ride through natural vegetation on an ancient trail. You will cycle over a 140m (459ft) suspension bridge and beside tram lines. The entire Timber Trail is an 80 km (50 km) long grade two overnight assignment.

Distance: 80km (50 miles), 2 days.

5. Te Iringa

On this grade five-course, mountain bikers who live by the motto “go hard or go home” should put their talents to the test. Despite being a walking road, Te Iringa is renowned for its challenging riding.

Distance: 38 kilometers (24 miles) roundtrip.

6. 42 Traverse

One of the most well-liked 4WD tracks on the North Island is this grade three rough, unmaintained trail. The 42 Traverse is best completed in dry conditions because it can be very challenging on muddy, damp terrain.

Distance: 50 kilometers (31 miles).

7. Waikato River Trails

This lengthy cycling excursion follows New Zealand’s longest river for up to 100km (62 miles). With up to grade three trails, the entire trip presents a challenge. Just bike between Arapuni and Little Waipa for a simple part of the path. Throughout the walk, there are amenities and lovely vistas.

Distance: 100 kilometers (62 miles).

8. Tree Trunk Gorge

With its river crossings, rocky terrain, and beech forest passages, this grade three route offers a more challenging ride. Epic! If you want to ride Tree Trunk Gorge, base yourself at Turangi.

Distance: 19 kilometers (12 miles).

9. Rotary Ride – Aratiatia

This ride may conveniently be started from the Taupo township. Riding a bike to Spa Park will allow you to visit the magnificent Huka Falls and take a soak in the on-site hot spring. From there, you can carry on through the bush and along fields to Aratiatia Dam. Plan your trip to the dam to coincide with the dam’s rapids viewing hours of 10 a.m., 12 p.m., and 2 p.m. (and 4 pm in summer).

Distance: 30 kilometers (19 miles) roundtrip distance.

10. The Great Lake Walkway – Lions Walk

Take this leisurely ride down the lakeside from Taupo Township toward Five Mile Bay if you’re truly lazy—we don’t judge. Simply proceed down the lakeside walkway. Easy.

Distance: 20.8 kilometers (13 miles).
