The annual Global Bicycle Towns Index, published by bike insurance firm Luko, analyzes 90 cities worldwide, analyzing various criteria and features to evaluate the overall cycling climate and select the best city in the world for riding.

The study’s cities choosing based on their readiness to invest in and develop cycling infrastructure and safety, with all of the characteristics used to evaluate each city divided into six major categories:

• Percentage of bicycle utilization due to weather
• Crime and security (i.e. number of fatalities and accidents)
• Infrastructure (i.e. number of bike stores, quantity and quality of bike routes) (i.e. number of bike shops, number and quality of bike paths)
• Sharing (i.e. quantity and quality of bike sharing schemes) 
• Events (i.e. is there a car-free day) (i.e. is there a car-free day)

Utrecht and Amsterdam are two of the greatest cities in the world for biking

It’s hardly surprising that many Dutch cities are included in the report, given the country’s renowned image as a cycling paradise. However, at the end of the day, only one city can win, and this year, that honor went to Utrecht!

Utrecht won a strong triumph and recaptured the number one spot with an overall score of 77,84 out of 100, while Amsterdam also managed to clinch a spot in the top 10, arriving in fifth place with 60,24 points.

Utrecht excelled in the proportion of bicycle utilization (51 percent), quantity and quality of specialized bike lanes, and government investment in cycling infrastructure. The city also excelled as the Dutch capital in crime and safety, owing to a low incidence of fatalities and thefts. In terms of the number of bike stores and the availability of bicycle sharing and rental systems, Amsterdam outnumbers Utrecht. Utrecht deserves the best city bikes in the Netherlands!
