Adventure seekers will find a playground of breathtaking scenery at Fiordland National Park. It is the biggest National Park in the nation and is situated in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island. 1. Milford Sound/Piopiotahi
Perhaps the most well-known attraction in Fiordland National Park is Milford Sound. With its majestic mountains and entrancing waterways, it is little wonder that this place is known as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” A fiord called Milford Sound is two hours journey from Te Anau. It’s frequently explored from the shore or on a day trip, and both options guarantee a special experience.
2. Doubtful Sound
Another fiord in the Fiordland National Park is called Doubtful Sound. A trip to Doubtful Sound begins with a cruise across Lake Manapouri, followed by a coach ride, before entering the Sound itself. When you are in the centre of this absolutely tranquil place, pinch yourself. You’re in for a treat if you want to see dolphins, New Zealand fur seals, or penguins.
3. Mirror Lakes
Mirror Lakes live up to their name by providing a flawless mirror reflection of their surroundings when the water is calm. This location is on Milford Road as you travel from Te Anau. Pull over and take a stroll along the developed boardwalk for about five minutes. It’s a fantastic opportunity to walk around while on the road!
4. Lake Gunn
About 40 minutes from Milford Sound, on Milford Road, sits Lake Gunn. Drive to the lake’s base and unwind by the peaceful waters and imposing, towering mountains. The Lake Gunn nature walk is a 45-minute circular track that you should check out if you’re up for a little extra adventure. In either case, you can expect to see some breathtaking scenery that exudes tranquillity.
5. Milford Track
One of New Zealand’s Great Walks, the Milford Track, leads you through stunning and recognizable scenery. You may find yourself exploring glacial-carved valleys and undiscovered waterfalls. This is a four-day hike in the Fiordland National Park that includes overnight stays in huts. The ideal months to hike this course are often from October through April.
6. Kepler Track
Another Great Walk of New Zealand that starts in Te Anau is the Kepler Track. It’s a 60km circle that takes 3–4 days to complete, snaking through the alpine environment. Discover enormous ridgelines covered with tussocks and open, panoramic vistas of the countryside. The ideal months to hike this course are often from October through April.
7. Lake Marian
Check out the Lake Marian Track by stopping off Milford Road close to Hollyford Road. In Fiordland National Park, Lake Marian is a lovely alpine lake. For some breathtaking views of the towering mountains against the frequently still, clear lake, walk the 3-hour return path to the lake.
The course starts with a swingbridge and proceeds over a well-worn path next to lovely waterfalls. Then, as you ascend towards the lake, the path becomes steeper. As is customary in Fiordland, be ready for muddy and damp track conditions.
8. Eglinton Valley
Along Milford Road, you are shielded from the elements by a deep beech forest and are surrounded by rich vegetation. The expansive, exposed Eglinton Valley is revealed as the road turns to follow the Eglinton River. Golden tussocks cover the valley floor.
The valley, which was created by glaciers millions of years ago, is bordered by enormous, steep mountains. This is a perfect opportunity to pause, breathe in the mountain air, and take some pictures.
