Top 10 Romantic Towns in the Netherlands that aren’t Amsterdam

Amsterdam is already too famous in the Netherlands. So I present a list of the top 10 Romantic Towns in the Netherlands you must visit.

These towns are genuinely charming, steeped in history, cobblestone streets, picturesque architecture, canals, and windmills. Enjoy fields of daffodils and spring tulips as you enjoy life in the slow lane.

1. Giethoorn

With its picturesque atmosphere, the large concentration of canals, and numerous boats, Giethoorn is known as the “Venice of the Netherlands”. With 90 kilometers (55 miles) of the canal, some houses can only be reached by boat.

If you visit this place in summer, rent a boat in advance as that is the crowded time of Giethoorn.

2. Delft

Delft is a typical Dutch town located between Rotterdam and The Hague. Delft has many cafes, small shops, and beautiful architecture; it is perfect if you want to spend the afternoon somewhere truly Dutch and sit on the terrace with a coffee or drink a cup of beer.

Alternatively, you can stroll through the weekend markets or parks. Nieuwe Kerk is also an interesting destination of Delft.

3. Haarlem

Located near Amsterdam, Haarlem is always recommended for those who don’t like the hustle and bustle of the big city but still want to enjoy the beautiful canals and an actual Dutch town.

Haarlem is the city that has it all. From hidden courtyards from a bygone era to trendy boutiques. From medieval churches to terraces over the water. From antique markets to pop concerts.

This town deserves to be in the top of the most romantic towns of the Netherlands.

4. Leiden

Leiden is a beautiful place to visit. It has the most canals in the Netherlands after Amsterdam and is home to 15 major museums.

Home to the oldest university in the Netherlands and birthplace of Rembrandt.

Leiden was also a stopover for several years between England and the New World for the fathers of the American Pilgrims at the turn of the century 17.

5. Naarden

Naarden is a small town near Amsterdam. This place is shaped like a star, as moats surround the village. Historically, it was part of Amsterdam’s Line of Defense, making this fortified town even more beautiful and exciting than it already is.

6. Maastricht

Despite its location relatively far from Amsterdam, Maastricht is a beautiful city filled with medieval architecture and plenty of entertainment.

You can walk around the city, visit the flea markets, go to the market square, visit some museums, drink on the rooftop … there is a lot to do in Maastricht.

7. The Hague

The Hague is a trendy place for international people – to live, work and visit. It is also the only major city to have a beach directly on the North Sea coast.

The Hague is a hub for innovation, entrepreneurship, and multiculturalism. It’s both modern and historical, so it’s a great combination. It is also home to the government and the International Court of Justice.

8. Alkmaar

Alkmaar is a town not only famous for its cheese. It has a historic downtown and is chock full of things to do.

Walking or cycling around the historic center should be on your to-do list. There are countless shops, restaurants, and cafes to keep you busy during your visit. There are also a few museums in Alkmaar that are worth a visit.

9. Valkenburg

Valkenburg in the southern province of Limburg is a place rich in history. It is home to Valkenburg Castle, whose stunning ruins you can come and explore. It’s one of those places worth visiting, and we highly recommend going!

In addition to wandering around to see all the attractive architecture (go to the train station!), there is a wide range of different museums, shops, restaurants, and cafes. Christmas is an incredibly wonderful time to visit as they have a Christmas market in the Valkenburg caves! It was a memorable occasion.

10. Hoorn

The beautiful little town of Hoorn is located in Noord-Holland, near lake IJsselmeer. It is picturesque, but it’s also close to a lake, dunes and the countryside.

This makes Hoorn a popular place to go for water sports! Hoorn is great to walk or cycle around, and there are museums, a shopping area, restaurants, and cafés — what more could we want?
