Mudgee, a developing center for food and wine in New South Wales, has retained its title as Australia’s Top Tourism Town Awards 2022 for the second year in a row. This demonstrates that the first time wasn’t an anomaly.
Mudgee, New South Wales: Australia’s Best Tourism Town 2022 (for the second year in a row)
The NSW Central Tablelands town received the honor at Australia’s Top Tourism Awards 2022 on Tuesday during a ceremony in Canberra.
Leianne Murphy, the acting chief executive of Mudgee Region Tourism, credited the town’s “community spirit” for the significant victory. According to Murphy, “We interact with over 350 local family-owned businesses, and the collaborative approach we have is without a doubt a standout.”
The tourism boss claimed that the ambitious goal of becoming Australia’s most popular destination, set three years ago, is succeeding.
Bendigo in Victoria (silver) and Mandurah in Western Australia (bronze) were regional favorites. Still, the NSW wine area prevailed, with Australian Tourism Industry Council (ATIC) members describing the battle as tough.
“Mudgee really is a true country town experience not to be missed,” said senior director of New South Wales Tourism Industry Council Paula Martin. “With its great food and wine scene and dedicated local businesses.”
The prestigious award is announced during Mudgee Wine and Food Month (September 2–October 3, 2022), one of the town’s major yearly events, where local wine and food producers from Mudgee and the surrounding area host events every weekend.

According to Murphy, the demand for lodging in the area has increased as a result of these occasions, with visitors increasingly making reservations further in advance and staying longer. At the tourist showcase, other award categories highlighted “tiny” and “little” Australian villages with promising tourism futures.
The best Tiny Tourism Town was the ancient harbor community of Strahan on Tasmania’s east coast. In contrast, the best Small Tourism Town award went to Exmouth on WA’s Coral Coast, which serves as the entrance to the renowned Ningaloo Marine Park. The awards, according to Australian Tourism Industry Council (ATIC) chair Evan Hall, are intended to honor the nation’s diversity and standout regional attractions.
