They appear to be from a fairytale, but these locations exist in real life. And, amazingly, they’re all right in our backyard. Here are the 20 most surreal and beautiful places in Australia that amazed the public.

1. Most surreal beautiful place in Australia: Whitehaven Beach.

Australia has over 10,000 beaches, but Whitehaven is the most well-known. The immaculate white silica sands that stretch 7 kilometers along the edge of Whitsunday Island are a mystery; other neighboring beaches contain hard, pulverized coral beaches. Claims that the sand is so pristine that it was utilized to make the Hubble Telescope’s lenses are most likely a myth.

2. Great Barrier Reef, Queensland

The Great Barrier Reef is 2,300 kilometers long and has thousands of reefs; this spectacular heart-shaped composition off the Whitsunday Islands is best seen by helicopter or plane.

3. Most surreal beautiful place in Australia: Sculptures at Lake Ballard

This startling artwork by British artist Antony Gormley displays 51 full-size sculptures of Menzies inhabitants produced from laser scans. You wouldn’t want to be out here at night, emerging from the heat haze like ghouls.

4. Northern Territory, Kata Tjuta.

The nearby Uluru is a global icon that gets all the attention, but Kata Tjuta’s astonishing 36 rock domes are equally impressive. They are often almost deserted, glowing a deep crimson at sunrise and sunset, and would be worth a trip to the Red Centre on their own.

5. Most surreal beautiful place in Australia: Bay of Fires.

The Bay of Fire, one of Australia’s most magnificent locations, was called by an English explorer in 1773 after fires set by local Indigenous people. Today, the term is connected with the fiery red granite that lights up its beaches, even though this is a rare lichen.

6. Western Australia’s Nullarbor Plain.

The Eyre Highway over the Nullarbor Plain is Australia’s straightest route, cutting through vast treeless wastelands. Keep an eye out for camels, wombats, and kangaroo herds, or pull over to see southern right whales from the spectacular Bunda Cliffs.

7. Western Australia’s Lake Hillier.

This bubble-gum pink lake on the Recherche Archipelago off the coast of Esperance is (most likely) created by a saltwater tolerant algae that grows here and nowhere else in Australia for some reason – experts haven’t figured it out yet! The lake is best seen from above.

8. Most surreal beautiful place in Australia: Bungle Bungles.

The 350 million-year-old Bungle Bungle Range has been an important spiritual site for Indigenous Australians for 40,000 years, although the outside world just “discovered” it in 1983.

9. Western Australia’s Pinnacles.

A land as flat, ancient, and wind-blasted as Australia is bound to have some bizarre geological oddities, and The Pinnacles are one of them. Scientists are still unsure if water critters, trees, or plants produced the limestone pillars. Meanwhile, do as comedian Billy Connolly did and dance naked around them.

10. Western Australia’s Wave Rock.
