Lake Okareka: Visit Beautiful Small Lake in Rotorua Area

Lake Okareka, one of the smaller lakes in the Rotorua area, is nestled away off the main road leading to lakes Tikitapu and Tarawera and continues to be off the usual path.

1. Lake Okareka: Amazing lake in Rotorua

About 12 km southeast of Rotorua, toward Lake Tarawera, is where you’ll find Lake Okareka. This small village is located next to a lake that is less than 10 kilometers in circumference and is shallow compared to some of the other lakes in the area.

The township has a calmness and charm to it and is seldom visited by tourists because Lake Okareka lies off the main tourist routes. It is situated in a gorgeous landscape of hills, native woodland, and agriculture.

A favorite destination for fishermen, the lake, woodland, reserves, and walking trails provide a variety of recreational options for both locals and visitors.

2. The meaning of the name

The meaning of the name Okareka is “the lake of pleasant food.” Maori used to plant kumara or sweet potatoes along the lake’s edge in ancient times. The location is now residential, with a few recreational options.

Trout fishing, boating, paddle boarding, and strolling are the major activities here, and there are lots of lovely places for picnics and barbecues. The lake is a stop on Rotorua Duck Trips’ tours, and horseback riding on the nearby farmland offers fantastic views of the lake and all the way to Mount Tarawera.

Boyes Beach is one of the most well-liked spots on the lake due to its expansive, sandy beach, safe swimming area, and kid-friendly amenities.

3. Trails for Biking & Walking

The Lake Okareka Walkway is a picturesque 5.5-kilometer loop that includes a lengthy boardwalk portion through wetlands. Young families and bird watchers like to stroll along this level, simple path.

4. Camping in Lake Okareka

Private vacation homes and bed and breakfasts make up the majority of the lodging options near Lake Okareka.
