Do you know how to say days of the week and months of the year in Te Reo?
The Māori language, also known as te reo Māori (pronounced [ˈmaːoɾi, te ˈɾeo ˈmaːoɾi]) or simply Te Reo (“the language”) – according to Wiki. Te Reo Maori is one of New Zealand’s two official languages (the other being sign language). Whether you reside in Aotearoa or are simply visiting, you should learn how to pronounce the language and some basic Maori words. There are two variants of the days of the week that are used in Māori. This is the version of Ngā Rā o te Wiki:
Monday — Rāhina
Tuesday — Rātū
Wednesday — Rāapa
Thursday — Rāpare
Friday — Rāmere
Saturday — Rāhoroi
Sunday — Rātapu
Ngā Rā o te Wiki is commonly used in modern Māori learning environments. However, the Kupu Arotau, or borrowed words, were commonly used in traditional texts and by native speakers like this:
Monday — Mane
Tuesday — Turei
Wednesday — Wenerei
Thursday — Taite
Friday — Paraire
Saturday — Hatarei
Sunday — Rātapu
Like days of the week, they also say months of the year in Te Reo in two different ways. The first version is Ngā Marama o te Tau and the second one is loan words. Like this:
January — Kohitātea — Hanuere
February — Hui-tanguru — Pēpuere
March — Poutū-te-rangi — Maehe
April — Paenga-whāwhā — Āperira
May — Haratua — Mei
June — Pipiri — Hune
July — Hōngongoi — Hūrae
August — Here-turi-kōkā — Ākuhata
September — Mahuru — Hepetema
October — Whiringa-ā-nuku — Ōketopa
November — Whiringa-ā-rangi — Noema
December — Hakihea — Tīhema
