A hippopotamus relaxes comfortably on its back on a river in South Africa

Things have gone wrong for this sun-loving hippo, but he appears to be content.

The massive animal was seen lying on its back in the water with its legs in the air, taking advantage of the nice weather.

The hippo was photographed in South Africa’s Kruger National Park by photographer Jackie Cilliers, who was taken aback by the unusual scene.

The 52-year-old woman, who was on vacation with her family, took the photos from a hide about 10 meters away from the hippo.

The height of relaxation: The hippo was seen sunning its bright pink belly
At first photographer Jackie Cilliers thought the animal was injured, but it later turned out to be chilling out in the water

She initially assumed the mammal was injured, but it appears it was attempting to tan its bright pink belly.

‘The images show the hippo pushing off his friend, rolling over, relaxing on his back, and yawning,’ Jackie explained.

‘The hippo risked being attacked by its mate, whom it persisted in pushing over.

‘At first, I assumed it was injured or ill, but it happened several times and remained stationary on its back for several minutes.

‘It appeared to enjoy being turned upside down.

‘I was surprised and pleased with the images, as were the others in the hide; several people laughed at the antics.

‘My favorite feature of his is his pink tummy.

‘I doubt I’ll ever see something like this again because it’s the first time I or anyone I know has seen it.’
