Beachgoers looking for white sand beaches should head to the Coromandel, a coastal wonderland in the North Island. The Coromandel will offer the ideal beach for you, whether you want to hike, enjoy the cool coastal breeze, snorkel in the local waters, ride the waves, or take your next Instagram-worthy photo.
1. Cathedral Cove
The beach is so beautiful that it was even used as the backdrop for the fantastical movie Narnia. This beach attracts more than 500,000 people a year thanks to the cathedral-like arch construction, which is a scenic wonder.
You will appreciate this magnificent marine reserve whether you prefer to take a beautiful flyover, a leisurely stroll, a fun kayak, a guided boat trip, brave the ocean water with snorkeling, or any other activity. For a more private experience, visit this beach in the early morning or late at night when there are fewer people around.
2. Matarangi Beach
Head to Matarangi Beach with your surfboard and bathing gear. This beach’s fine white sand makes it ideal for a day trip with the family. You’ll have everything you need thanks to the abundance of amenities available, which include a licensed cafe, public restrooms, a playground, rental cottages, and even the Matarangi Fire Station that can be rented out for events.
Want to spice up your beach trip with a fun festival? Attend The Taste of Matarangi in April each year for live entertainment, regional foods, beer, and seafood. The annual Easter Sunday Fishing Competition is a must-do beach activity if you enjoy fishing competitively.
3. New Chums
This remote white sand beach is proud to be one of the top 10 beaches in the world. You’ll feel as though you’re on your own little island since there are no structures or roads around you, only undisturbed native bush.
Parking and public restrooms at William Mangakahia Lagoon Reserve are the only amenities available here. To ensure that the beach keeps its sanctuary-like atmosphere, visitors are asked to keep it spotless. So as you appreciate this hidden treasure, be sure to just leave your tracks behind.
4. Whangapoua Beach
If you’re seeking for a beach close by with a touch of civilization, this one is for you. New Chums may make you feel like you’re at the end of the world because there are no stores or structures there.
A bathing beach with white sand, a tiny wharf, a boat ramp, and a convenience store. Although the northern portion of the beach is protected from the waves if you have any inexperienced swimmers, swimming is safe for the entire family here.

5. Cooks Beach
Captain Cook noticed this beach while sailing across the ocean, and you will no doubt notice it too. This white sand beach, which is the ideal vacation spot, is surrounded by tidal estuaries. There is a boat ramp, a playground, and available electric BBQs near the southern estuary known as Purangi. Due to the shallow waters, the northern end is also ideal for younger kids.
Take a break and have lunch at Mercury Bay Estate Winery & Restaurant while admiring the lovely bay if you want to have adult time. Or purchase some kai from the nearby Cooks Beach stores. Offering everything from traditional fish and chips to ice cream to chill yourself on a hot day.
6. Hot Water Beach
Dig your own hot water mineral pool at this beach to get your hands dirty. Bring a spade or shovel, or you may rent one at a nearby cafe if you don’t want sand under your nails. This natural wonder allows you to create your own spa pool for bathing thanks to thermal water bubbles coming from beneath the earth. Enjoy the soothing sounds of the ocean waves while you soak in some relaxation time in the hot tub.
7. Hahei Beach
There are constantly people on the sand and boats in the bay at this remote beach. Why Hahei Beach is so well-liked is clear. The water is crystal clear, the waves are modest, and there is generally calm and protection from the breeze.
The ideal swimming beach is right here. Hahei is situated next to Cathedral Cove and halfway between Cooks Beach and Hot Water Beach. You can see Goat Island, also known as Mahurangi Island, from the shore. Enjoy a taste of what the Coromandel feels like in July in the Mediterranean.
