Why is Cycling The Best Choice in The Netherlands?

It’s reasonable to assume that Dutch people are pretty serious about their passion for bicycles. In fact, Dutchies are known for biking in all types of weather, while texting, while intoxicated, while toting kids in a bucket, while naked, and even when it’s raining. Why is biking so common here, then? Is it merely a fun and social activity, or is it more convenient? These ten explanations show how unusual biking in the Netherlands is.

1. The surroundings are remarkably flat.

In the Netherlands, one thing will strike you as obvious: flatness. Mountains just do not exist in this nation, despite the Dutch people’s desire for them.

Biking and commuting to work, school, or a friend’s house is easy sailing — and sweat-free — with no bumpy roads or need to struggle up a hill.

2. There is excellent cycling infrastructure everywhere.

Dutch communities have been implementing bike pathways, cycling traffic lights, and pro-cycling regulations to make streets more bicycle-friendly since the 1980s.

Bikes predominate on Dutch streets and for good reason. Not only are there distinct and well-marked bike lanes, but all bridges, elevators in stations, trains, and metros, as well as staircases in public areas, are all built with bicycles in mind.

3. Cycling is more affordable and healthy.

In the Netherlands, owning a car is not inexpensive. Let’s face it. You’ll spend a ton of geld (cash) if you factor in the cost of gas, taxes, and parking.

Bicycles are an inexpensive, useful, and healthy transportation choice since people use them daily for anything from going out at night to going to the gym or visiting someone.

Also worth mentioning is the fact that the Netherlands is among the ten healthiest nations in the world. Is some of it the result of all the cycling?

4. Dutch people are aggressively encouraged by the government and employers to bicycle.

The government frequently aggressively opposes driving in favor of bicycle use because the Netherlands is known for being bicycle-friendly.

The Netherlands, however, goes a step further by providing bike allowances at places of employment. To encourage individuals to give up their vehicles, several businesses offer to pay for cyclists’ travel expenditures with a tax-free mileage allowance of €0.19 per kilometer.

5. There are bike parking spaces everywhere.

While some nations have parking lots for cars, the Netherlands has…bike parking lots. Fietsenstallingen is located all throughout the nation and may be found outdoors, indoors, underground, or even underwater; this is quite common, very useful, and frequently free.

Two of the largest underground bike parking lots in the world are located in the Netherlands, one in Utrecht with space for up to 12,500 bikes and the other in The Hague with room for up to 8,500 bikes.

6. Cycling is environmentally friendly, and the Dutch are proud of it.

Cycling is a fantastic method to enhance both your physical and mental well-being, but it’s also good for the environment. Dutch people routinely take satisfaction in the small environmental contribution they make by choosing to commute on two wheels instead of a car.

Bikes don’t use any gas. Thus they don’t produce any air-polluting pollutants or carbon dioxide, which is a factor in climate change. Yes, opting to bike significantly reduces your carbon footprint, and we’re all for it!

7. Bike purchases are incredibly affordable.

A used bike may be purchased in the Netherlands for between €50 and €250, so it won’t break the bank.

Best feature? The only expenses you have after purchasing a bike are maintenance charges. It will save you hundreds of dollars on petrol, pricey maintenance, and insurance compared to a car.

8. No sporting equipment, such as a helmet, is required.

There is nothing worse than riding your bike to a big event or gathering while wearing a helmet, only to remove it and discover that you haven’t brushed your hair in days.

Fortunately, wearing a helmet is not required in the Netherlands, nor is it necessary to fit into Lycra (unless you want to, you do you!).

Unlike the normal cyclist who rides a bicycle daily, Dutch people only really wear sportswear if they are wielrenners (racebike riders). Who has the time to constantly change into and out of athletic attire? After all, Dutch people like to complete tasks in a useful and convenient way.

9. Bike home instead of taking a cab after drinking

To travel home after a night of drinking, would an Uber cost €40? Nee bedankt is how the Dutch say “no thanks.” Anyhow, a cool bike ride is the perfect way to recover from all the beer drinking.

Even though it is against the law and risky to bike while intoxicated, the Dutch argue that spending less on public transportation means more money for beer.

The authentic Dutch way of getting home after a night out is to bike rather than worrying about when the final tram or metro leaves.

10. One of the safest places in the world to cycle is the Netherlands.

The Netherlands was ranked as the third-safest place in the world to ride, and Utrecht was crowned the bike-friendliest city ever. Are we shocked?

Bicyclists feel strong and protected on the roads since they have the right of way and are given priority over vehicles and pedestrians by law. To prioritize the safety of others, bikers are also expected to respect and abide by traffic laws.
