First Rugby In New Zealand
Charles Monro brought rugby to New Zealand in 1870. Monro, who was raised close to Nelson, was born there and went to school in England. The first rugby match was played in Botanical Reserve in Nelson as a result of his introduction of the sport to local friends (a sign now stands on the ground to commemorate the game).
