The Negen Straatjes Location

In 1997, the Negen Straatjes received official recognition as one of Amsterdam’s districts. A shop owner from Amsterdam named Djoeke Wessing spearheaded the effort to have the district, which at the time was known for its independent boutiques, given its own identity. The district’s name is self-explanatory; it is comprised of nine little streets and is located immediately west of the city center.

Reestraat, Beerenstaat, and Runsstraat are some of Nine Streets’ key locations. Keizergracht and Herengracht are adjacent to Haartenstraat, Wolvenstraat, and Huidenstraat. Three streets in Singel are Gasthuismolenstraat, Oudespiegelstraat, and Wijde Heisteeg.

The Negen Straatjes, which is five minutes’ walk from Amsterdam’s Royal Palace, has a more premium, hip feeling than the adjoining Kalverstraat’s high street shops, which have a more mainstream air. With several major brands moving to the area in recent years, gentrification was unavoidably a factor. However, the Negen Straatjes continues to be a destination for eating, drinking, and boutique shopping.
