Top places to see tulips in the Netherlands in 2023

Spring has officially arrived in the Netherlands, and the temperature gradually rises as the country awakens from its winter slumber. More than half of the country is covered in a carpet of pastoral farmland, which blooms in a colorful blaze of flowers from March to May. Tulips are synonymous with the Netherlands. During this time of year, many farms in South Holland, North Holland, and Flevoland are covered in a tapestry of beautiful blooms. A trip to the tulip fields and the world-famous Keukenhof gardens is an excellent way to mark the changing seasons. We’ve compiled a list of the best spots to see tulips in the Netherlands and some recommendations for where to stay.

Noordwijk, South Holland

Any flower fan knows the word ‘Keukenhof,’ but only genuine tulip aficionados know that visiting a tulip field by bike is the greatest way to experience these lovely petaled plants. The municipality of Noordwijk and the neighboring village of Noordwijkerhout are two of the best sites in the Netherlands to see tulips.

If you have a free day, consider cycling through the flower fields of Noordwijk to the beach resort of Katwijk. It’s a great way to spend a sunny day supporting local tulip producers. Many farms, such as the Tulperij, also offer paid tulip excursions. The Alexander Hotel in Noordwijk aan Zee is between the sea and the flower fields.

Lisse, South Holland

The normally tranquil town of Lisse is not far from Noordwijk. In the spring, though, thousands of tulip-obsessed tourists flock to Lisse’s most famous attraction: the groomed Keukenhof gardens. If you prefer to avoid tourist traps to see tulips in their “natural habitat,” the tulip fields near Lisse are a must-see. Well-paved bike lanes cut out the finest path for exploring the Netherlands’ bollenstreek, or bulb belt. Like any public tulip field, respect for the tulips is a top responsibility, and visitors should avoid handling the delicate blooms.

The famed Keukenhof has 32 hectares of spectacular flowerbeds, with seven million bulbs in full bloom. It’s open for two months a year, from late March to late May, with a different theme each year. ‘Flower Classics’ is the topic for 2022, and it pays homage to flowers as a symbol in art, architecture, and design. Expect to see everything from the Girl with the Pearl Earring – complete with tulips, of course – to flower power designs reminiscent of the 1960s and 1970s resistance movement. Boutique Suites Lisse – Schiphol is located in the heart of the city.

Amsterdam, North Holland

Amsterdam was at the epicenter of the 17th-century tulip fever that swept the country. Between 1634 and 1637, the country was engulfed in a tulip-trade frenzy, leading the economy to balloon and fall. Though tulips remain popular, Amsterdam’s enthusiasm for the bloom has waned recently. On the other hand, the Tulip Festival Amsterdam occurs once a year and seeks to revive tulip fever without economic disaster.

This month-long festival of the national flower sees the city’s noteworthy landmarks and popular districts decked with fresh blooms. Except for the museum gardens, which have regular entrance rates, all displays in public spaces are free to enjoy. It’s difficult to surpass the position of Hotel Weber, which is just next to the centrally located Leidseplein. If you have the means, check out Room Mate Aitana, a stunning design hotel located directly on the river.

Haarlem, North Holland

If the concept of tulips sitting in static beds doesn’t appeal to you, you need a flower parade. Bloemencorso translates to “flower parade,” a fleet of flowery floats that trundles from Noordwijk to Haarlem, cheered on by rows of happy onlookers. It begins in the morning and travels 42 kilometers before arriving in Haarlem at nightfall when marching bands usher the parade into town. It’s vibrant, colorful, and a lot of fun. After a day of flower-themed celebrations, you’ll be grateful for a comfy hotel close to the procession. Retire to the Amrâth Grand Hotel Frans Hals and Van der Valk Hotel. Both have great comfort and cleanliness ratings, so you’ll get a nice night’s sleep.

Noordoostpolder, Flevoland

Flevoland may appear to be a universe away on a map to travelers flying into Amsterdam. The Noordoostpolder tulip path, on the other hand, makes for a delightful short-day excursion from the capital and is best experienced by automobile. Traveling up north can also be more rewarding because this area sees significantly fewer tourists than the other flower-spotting hotspots.

The countryside has fresh air, beautiful colors, and photo chances. Along this 100-kilometer road, you’ll see fields carpeted in vibrant colors of blooms and wine-tasting possibilities, galleries, and little communities with their own pieces of flower-based artwork. Kraggenburg is one such town, a charming village typical of the Flevoland province. Hotel van Saaze, located right along the Noordoostpolder tulip trail, is located here.
