Things that shock tourists when they visit Amsterdam

Do not be surprised that Amsterdam is a city full of strange and unusual. Be prepared for cultural things shock when visiting Amsterdam. Let the adventure begin!

Aggressive beggars

When you step out of the train station in Amsterdam, the first thing you notice is aggressive beggars. The beggars in Amsterdam are more aggressive than most other places we’ve been to. Because Amsterdam has a party culture and is an expensive city. So they know tourists are more likely to spend money. Be careful for these, and they will make you feel uncomfortable.

Even if you don’t go directly to the red light district, when you walk anywhere in Amsterdam, you will be shocked at the pervasive smell of cannabis. You’ll smell it everywhere, and there are coffee shops all over town with cannabis menus you can order.

Dutch people speak English very well.

You will be shocked to know how excellent the English of everyone in Amsterdam is. You don’t even have to speak Dutch; everyone here speaks perfect English, even the beggars.

Red Light District

The Red Light District in Amsterdam is world-famous, but you’ll still be shocked when you see it for the first time. You will see women in the windows, trying to entice customers inside. Although this is shocking, please don’t take pictures of them. What shocks some visitors is that this is only a small part of Amsterdam, it’s not something you see everywhere in town.

Be careful with bike lanes.

Red lanes are for bicycles only and pedestrians should stay away from them or pay attention when crossing red lanes. Don’t be surprised if you almost get run over by a bike or tram in Amsterdam at least once a day. Just think: “Red = Dead.”

If you get a chance to cycle in Amsterdam, do it, it’s a quintessential Amsterdam experience. They even have bike tours that you can do.

There are canals everywhere in Amsterdam, and they are beautiful. With so many bridges, there are dozens of viewpoints around town. And the architecture of Amsterdam is fantastic to see and photograph. While canal tours are super touristy, they’re worth it to behold.

Expensive accommodation

You will be shocked at how expensive hotels in Amsterdam are, especially on weekends. For a fraction of the price, you can stay in Haarlem or another small town just outside the city center.) When visiting Amsterdam, you won’t spend as much time in your room as you’ll be out. Beyond exploring, don’t worry too much if you rent a small room.

Drunk people on the street

It’s worth reiterating that Amsterdam remains a top party destination, especially on weekends. You will see drunk people and people throwing stones on the streets of Amsterdam. Many people come here and don’t know their limits and go overboard. Do your best to avoid any large party groups you might see as you walk around. If you want to see the red light district but want to avoid these, try to go earlier in the day.
