Hugging is a great way to start the day, but few people would share their affection with a fully-grown lion. Man gets a hug from the lion he rescued.

However, conservationist Valentin Gruener is more like a father to Sirga, who is nine years old.

In 2012, when she was a sickly cub abandoned by her mother, he rescued her, and the two have since formed an incredible bond.

At the Modisa Wildlife Project in Botswana, where Sirga lives with German Valentin, 34, and his partner Sarah, 33, they walk, play wrestling, and even swim together.

“I suppose Sirga considers me a close friend.

She enjoys giving me a bear hug. As a domestic cat, she rubs her head frequently against mine,’ Valentin said.

“Sirga has never been aggressive towards me, but I have a tremendous amount of respect for her power.”

“I am confident that she is aware that I am quite unique.”

The African jungle queen, now nine years old, was born after her parents were captured and relocated to a rehabilitation camp for killing livestock.

But Sirga’s mother stopped feeding her, and without Valentin’s assistance, she faced certain death.

After nearly a decade, man and large feline share an unbreakable bond.

And Sirga’s natural feline head rub greeting is so frequent for Valentin that he claims it gave him cauliflower ears.

Valentin co-founded the Modisa Wildlife Project with the intention of conserving 7,500 hectares for the benefit of wildlife and local people.

It also provides lodging for guests from around the globe who wish to experience the incredible African bush.

Valentin stated, “I suppose Sirga considers me a close friend. I doubt that she views me as another lion but rather as her companion with whom she has spent the past decade.

“Sirga enjoys being out in her 2,000-hectare property with me. Her favorite activity is hunting, but not the killing part, so much as sneaking up on animals and giving them a good chase.

‘Most of the time, Sirga simply stalks up close, and we sit and watch while the animals are unaware of our presence; I believe this is her favorite time.

Every time I see her, she also loves to stand on her hind legs and give me a big hug.

Valentin continued, ‘Sirga roams her territory and behaves as any wild lion would. She hunts, and I occasionally join her.

As lions typically hunt in pride, she requires assistance when she catches larger prey because she cannot hold it down from behind and reach the throat to kill it simultaneously.

“To end the suffering, I simply slit her prey’s throat while she holds it down,”

“She is also used to educate the public, not only about lions but also about all other wildlife and conservation efforts.”

“Her social media following is growing rapidly, and in order to provide information to those who are unable to visit, I am also producing a podcast about the Kalahari called the Kalahari Diaries in which I highlight in an entertaining yet informative manner some of the conservation challenges in southern Africa.”
