Piha Beach: The Most Unique Black Sand Beach In New Zealand

One of New Zealand’s most picturesque beaches is Piha Beach. It is undoubtedly a paradise with the neighboring Kitekite Falls, rolling waves, and black sand. Here are several reasons why you should visit this wonderful beach, including the spectacular sunsets and climbing to the breathtaking waterfall.

Why is Piha beach so unique?

Piha Beach, a black sand beach just 40 minutes outside of Auckland, is fantastic for a number of reasons. Firstly, it’s a premier surfing location in the nation. Secondly, the magnificent Lion’s Rock dominates the beach with its majestic presence. Finally, there are numerous hikes you may do in the area, from walks by waterfalls to treks along wide coastline vistas.

How to get there

Piha Beach’s proximity to New Zealand’s largest city—which is just over an hour away—is one of its many alluring qualities. Due to its proximity to Auckland, Piha Beach is especially well-liked on weekends and during the summer.

Fly: The Auckland Airport serves as the main entry point for the entire Auckland Region. It is the primary landing zone in the Piha area. It takes about 50 minutes to make the straight journey from the terminals.

Driving: We’re going to presume you’re coming from Auckland and start driving right now. Almost everyone does that. Fortunately, the journey is not only simple but also incredibly beautiful. Just take the Piha Road out of town and head southwest. You’ll pass through untamed Waitakere Ranges scenery on the whole journey there.

Things to do at Piha Beach

Visit Piha Beach Lion Rock

One of the most recognizable sights on New Zealand’s North Island is this enormous mound of stone. The eroded neck of a volcano that erupted more than 16 million years ago gives it the appearance of a furious animal. Today, you may walk around Lion Rock and even ascend the artificial steps for a better perspective.

Surfing is the best thing to do

Piha Beach boasts some of New Zealand’s best waves and has gained recognition throughout the world for its surfing. From sunrise to night, a large number of people may be seen surfing in Piha. Just keep in mind that experienced surfers should avoid the waves.

Coincidentally, one of the first surf clubs in New Zealand was founded here in 1934! So when you hit the Piha waves, simply know that you’ll be surfing in a really unique and historic location.

Kitekite Falls hike

The stunning Kitekite Falls is only a 20-minute stroll from Piha Beach. The one item that’s possibly worth leaving the beach area for is this!

On an easy circle to the waterfall, the jungle stroll will take you past some of the rich flora of the North Islands. Take your time exploring the area around Kitekite Falls once you arrive there. Three separate tiers make up the 40-meter-high display, and you may access each one by ascending stairs to obtain a higher perspective.

The best time to swim beneath the falls is early in the morning when there aren’t any other people around. Take your time and enjoy it—the complete loop will only take you about an hour.

Also, Waitakere Ranges Hike

The Waitakere Ranges offer a variety of hiking opportunities. The best part is that some of the best are right around Piha Beach. We really adore the Tasman Lookout Walk, which leads to a viewpoint overlooking the actual beach. Those that have more time should make sure to include Kitekite Falls on their list.

Watch the sunset at Piha beach

There is no better time to be at the beach than at sunset, regardless of how you spend your days. Every day, as the sun sets below the South Pacific Ocean, the entire coast lights up for a brief period of time. Even when we went midweek during the peak season, it seemed like the beach was all to ourselves.

It appears that most day-trippers from Auckland to Piha Beach have already left for home. After our enchanted visit, we are certain that this is one of New Zealand’s top locations for a stroll down the beach after dusk.
