The desolate Skeleton Coast vistas of Namibia and their sweeping red sand dunes have long been on Melissa Klurman’s bucket list of places to see in Africa. Klurman has been writing about travel in Africa for 20 years. The delay, she claims, was well worth it because “this is the year I finally was able to really immerse myself in the delights of Namibia.”
What made 2023 the ideal year to travel there? “This is a true game changer for visiting the stunningly gorgeous, and very remote, desert sections of the country,” says Klurman of the safari business Natural Selection, which operates outstanding, eco-friendly resorts like the magnificent Shipwreck Lodge.
Driving has always been the most common mode of transportation in Namibia, but flying safaris are the standard and quite necessary in other safari regions of Africa, such as Botswana. According to Klurman, being able to fly instead of the drive made a huge impact on her schedule and greatly increased accessibility for tourists to this off-the-beaten-path safari location.
According to Klurman, he was able to travel to Etosha Heights in the far north of the country to observe animals like elephants, lions, and giraffes before taking a flight to the incredibly isolated Skeleton Coast Shipwreck Resort, where survival in the enormous sand dunes looks all but impossible.
“For the remainder of the Natural Selection itinerary, a private pilot flew my group to Hoanib Valley, which consists of just six tents in a setting that feels like another planet, and then on to the Dark Sky Reserve of Kwessi Dunes all the way in the southern NamibRand, which is now my new favorite lodge anywhere.”
