After the castle, the Church of the Holy Rude is Stirling’s second-oldest structure. Founded in 1129 as Stirling’s parish church under the rule of David I (1124–1153). Early in the 15th century, a fire decimated the original church, along with much of Stirling, and the replacement structure took 150 years to complete. In Holy Rude, Scotland, the young James VI was anointed king in 1567.
