6 Most Beautiful Beaches Just A Short Drive From Edinburgh

Even though it is Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh is only a short drive from some of the region’s most beautiful beaches. Due to its accessibility and relative smallness, it is simple to visit secluded country beaches, hotspots for surfing, and quaint harbors. Here are our best suggestions for places to visit close to the Scottish capital.

1. Yellowcraig Beach

About a 50-minute drive east of the center of Edinburgh is the East Lothian shoreline, where Yellowcraig Beach is located. Yellowcraig is a well-liked location for dog walkers from the charming neighboring towns of Dirleton, Aberlady, and North Berwick.

In the summer, local swimmers also frequent the area. It’s a terrific summer hangout thanks to the barbeque area, nature trail, and huge wooded area, but the view is what really draws people there. The old lighthouse on Fidra Island, which served as the model for Robert Louis Stevenson’s well-known story Treasure Island, may be seen from the beachfront.

2. Cramond Beach

Cramond has a distinct fishing-village vibe while being only a 20-minute drive from the city center, thanks to its whitewashed homes and cozy bars. Its promenade and modest, sandy beach are ideal for a leisurely bike ride or stroll.

You can also walk to Cramond Island, which has a colorful history that includes time spent as a Roman outpost and a defense station in both world wars, provided you are mindful of the tide. All three Forth bridges may be seen from the structure’s highest point.

3. Portobello Beach

The neighborhood of Portobello, or Porty as it’s known locally, is a well-liked destination because of its coastal cafés, art galleries, and long, sandy beach. The historic seafront of Portobello, which is only a 20-minute drive from the heart of Edinburgh, is home to independent gift stores, eateries, B&Bs, and authentic Victorian swimming pools.

The 3.2km (2 miles) long beach is popular in excellent weather and is great for longer runs or walks. International volleyball tournaments, triathlon races, and the yearly summer Big Beach Busk are just a few of the well-known events that are held here.

4. Seacliff

With its dazzling waters and amazingly clean beach, Seacliff Beach is coveted by dog walkers, swimmers, and surfers and is only 50 minutes from Edinburgh by vehicle. You can reach the tiniest sandstone harbor in the UK by strolling down this section of the coastline.

You can also take in views of Tantallon Castle’s ruins and local attraction, Bass Rock. If you plan to spend the day at this mainly undeveloped beach, bring food and water with you since there are no local cafés and it isn’t as popular with tourists. Keep in mind that there is a £3 admission fee.

5. Belhaven Bay

Belhaven Bay is found more south of Seacliff Beach. Belhaven Bay extends from Belhaven, some 30 miles east of Edinburgh, to the north of the River Tyne and is a portion of John Muir Country Park.

Due to its vastness and popularity among dog walkers, the beach is also an excellent place to have a picnic because of its low sand dunes and breathtaking views of the Forth Estuary. Belhaven Bay also offers surf and paddleboarding classes and equipment rentals, catering to its more daring guests. Although the beach is private, neighboring public parking is £2.

6. Silver Sands

On the Firth of Forth’s opposite bank from Edinburgh is where Silver Sands is located. The Sands is located in the ancient community of Aberdour in the Fife region, just 40 minutes from the city.

Visitors can take in the scenery along the shoreline while looking out over the islands of Inchmickery and Inchcolm, the latter of which is renowned for its 13th-century abbey, or they can join the Fife Coastal Path for a lengthier stroll. You can then stop by the charming seaside café for a delicious cup of coffee or piece of cake.
