When strolling through this place, you will feel like turning back to the old days.

The plaza is a perfect mixture of surf culture and small-village spirit in Hanalei. Established in the 20th century, you can still see mom-and-pop stores everywhere in town. And people still call these shops the center home.

Generations of locals and even visitors have come to browse through these retro boutiques and the family-run galleria.

Must-Visit Nostalgic Stores

For those who love the out-of-date vibe, we recommend some stores you can visit as well as shopping when coming to Hanalei.

The first one is Backdoor Surf Shop. This has always been a favorite spot of Hanalei people when it comes to rad alternative surfing and stake clothing.

Then, take a look at Pedal n Paddle. The owner of this store is one of the first residents to take up tenancy in the plaza in the 80s. They help you prepare essentials to have the best experience on the sea shore.

The Village Snack Shop and Bakery is another mainstay established in the 80s. People come here to taste the famous chocolate haupia pie and chile pepper chicken.

A silk-screening store, Spinning Dolphin, is from the 80s as well. Melanie Kuebler, the owner of the shop said that not much has altered here. She added that everything was like when they first built the store. Since Melanie and her husband were artists, the construction was the ideal transition for them.

These shops at the shopping center in Hanalei Bay hold a dedicated following of out-of-state consumers. They often return to the village and find their way back to these stores to shop or just merely have a chit-chat with friendly locals.

Melanie even says that she has chances to see the growth of out-of-state visitors. One time, parents came in with 2 children, the following year was 3, and a couple of years later was 4.

The Current Development

Though still concentrating on the retro spirit, the Ching Young Village has developed excessively from its beginning.

Just from a small group of family-owned stores which produced a little of everything, the place remains its reputation and has continuously grown until now.

Long-time tenants have renovated their stores. There is also a Post Office to help the local neighborhood and develop the visitor industry.

A Close-Knit Community – Hanalei Bay

People living in this area have been through hardships together for decades. For example, Hurricane Iniki ruined many homes and caused tons of damage to the island. In order to lift up the spirit, the residents gathered together and held a small competition. With just a humble but healing activity, people can truly feel the community connection. This act turned into a tradition in the neighborhood as well.
