6 Best Hikes in the Taranaki Region to Enjoy Natural Beauty

Explore the lush forests, thundering waterfalls, and mossy swamps that encircle the magnificent dormant volcano Taranaki Maunga/Mount Taranaki in the Egmont National Park/Te Papakura o Taranaki. At every elevation in the park, there are countless opportunities for exploration for people of all skill levels.

1. Dawson Falls

One of Taranaki’s most scenic short hikes is Dawson Falls, which is located in Egmont National Park. Along your walk, you’ll be treated to the tranquil sounds of tui, kereru, and bellbirds in addition to the stunning scenery of the mountain canopy. If you choose the five-minute route, you’ll come upon the Dawson Falls Power Station.

Unbelievably one of the oldest generators still in use! Listen for the Kapuni Stream, which supplies the Dawson Falls Lodge with its energy. To explore the region or vantage point of this magnificent 18-meter waterfall, you can also follow the 10-minute trail.

6. Encircling the mountain

This 4-5 day hike through the hard bush and mountains are one of the more difficult treks in Taranaki. Although the route has markers/poles and high/low alternatives in some areas, it is possible that snow, ice, tree overgrowth, or river floods will obstruct the way.

To help you along the trip, navigation and backcountry experience are encouraged. As you finish the challenging circle around Mount Taranaki, you’ll experience a lot of isolation and breathtaking sights.
