Wategos Beach: One of Byron Bay’s Most Famous Beaches

I cannot recommend this serene bay enough if you’re searching for a place to spend the day with your family and friends. Here is a detailed guide to Wategos Beach in Byron, with information on its location, travel options, and what to anticipate once you get there.

1. Wategos Beach: The best spot to play water sports in Byron Bay

One of Byron Bay’s most famous spots is Wategos Beach, which you really must see while you’re there.

You’ll enjoy the serene splendor of this protected beach on Cape Byron’s northern side. It’s a wonderful place to picnic and plays because the headland shields you from the more untamed waters beyond.

It is also used by the neighborhood bottlenose dolphins for entertainment, as they display their fluid surfing prowess on the approaching waves.

2. Where is Wategos Beach?

On the Cape Byron Lighthouse’s northern side is Wategos Beach.

Wategos may be reached from central Byron in about 10 minutes by car or in 1 hour by walking the seaside boardwalk.

3. Getting there

It takes no longer than 10 minutes to drive here from the heart of Byron Bay. It takes about 40 minutes to get to Wategos Byron from the nearby town of Ballina.

Since there isn’t much parking at Wategos Beach Byron, you might have to circle the lot a few times before finding a spot. Parking here is metered and costs $4 per hour; it’s not the cheapest, but it’s worthwhile.

When you arrive, don’t try to avoid paying for parking because there are parking inspectors who will slap you with a high charge if your parking ticket isn’t valid.

4. Best activities at Wategos Beach

Have a picnic

Bring a picnic, some beverages, and food to cook on one of the free beachside grills, then eat it on the sand or at a picnic table.

Surfing is a must

This is a wonderful choice if you’re looking for some uncrowded waves in Byron Bay, especially if you’re a longboarder.

Keep a look out for bottlenose dolphins surfing the incoming waves as you surf the right-hand point break that wraps around Cape Byron.

Don’t miss Little Wategos Beach

You can find Little Wategos Beach, another undiscovered treasure, by following the rocks around the southern edge of the main beach.

The furthest easterly point of the Australian Mainland is this little piece of beauty. On low tide, you may explore the rocky headland and locate some amazing small rock pools.

Visit Cape Byron Lighthouse

Climbing the stairs to the renowned Cape Byron Lighthouse is another of the top things to do. Either from the end of the parking lot or there is a track that ascends from Little Wategos, you can access the walking path to get to the lighthouse.

This is one of my favorite quick hikes in Byron since it provides breathtaking views of the entire coastline. Take your time on this short hike; you’re likely to see native Australian animals, including kangaroos and kookaburras that chirp.
