10 Reasons You’ll Want to Visit Lake Tekapo, New Zealand

There must be something to do with a church, excellent shepherds, and sheepdogs. But there is a lot more to it than that. Lake Tekapo, which claims to be New Zealand’s highest alpine lake and is located in the South Island’s Mackenzie Valley, is a picture of authentic, unspoiled New Zealand at its most charming.

1. You’ll be astounded by the beauty itself

Adjectives fall short of capturing the scope of the breathtaking surroundings in this nook of Godzone. There are photo opportunities everywhere you turn, from vibrant lupin displays in the warmer months to the turquoise waters and towering alps beyond.

2. The night will be so starry that it will astound you

One of the best night sky views in New Zealand, if not the entire world, can be found at Lake Tekapo. Stars that may be seen with the unaided eye are incredibly clear and numerous.

3. You can see a peek at what is further away

The largest telescope in New Zealand is housed at the Mount. John University Observatory, which dominates Lake Tekapo. See the wonders of the cosmos right in your own backyard by taking an Earth and Sky tour during the day or at night.

4. You’ll discover just how fortunate Kiwis are

One of New Zealand’s most widely pictured churches is the 1935-built Church of the Good Shepherd. Visitors from around the world and locals alike throng (pun intended) to catch a glance through the altar window, which exquisitely frames breathtaking views of the lake and mountains.

5. A working farm is where you can put up your hat

The Mackenzie Region, which surrounds Lake Tekapo, has a long history of sheep farming dating back to the mid-1850s (and stealing). When the water is low, the ruins of the former Tekapo Station can still be seen, but if you want to experience farm life firsthand, consider staying in the shearer’s quarters at Sawdon Station.

6. Take a photo with your best friend there

The Bronze Sheepdog, a monument honoring working collie dogs, is prominently displayed on the lakeshores next to the Church of the Good Shepherd. Locals from Mackenzie County commissioned it in the late 1960s as a homage to the crucial function these dogs perform in the daily operations of the working farm.

7. One can lose themselves in a winter paradise

With three-tiered hot pools, an ice skating rink, a tubing park, and a day spa, Tekapo Springs is the ideal family vacation destination. Fill your stomachs at the beautiful Tahr Bar & Café once you’ve exhausted or revived yourself with those activities.

8. It can be carved into the mountains

For some winter fun, hit the slopes at Mt. Dobson or Roundhill Ski Area. The smooth slopes of Roundhill are ideal for novices, families, and groups. Skiers of all skill levels can use Mt. Dobson, and you can park at the highest lot in New Zealand (1725m above sea level).

9. You can experience what the actual Middle Earth is like

Even though the filming locations are long gone, it’s still a fantastic area to camp if you want to immerse yourself in Middle Earth. An hour and a half to the west of Lake Tekapo is Lake Pukaki, which served as the setting for Lake Town in the film The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. It is located at the foot of the towering Aoraki Mount Cook.

10. You have a ton of options

Why not try your hand at one of the several other hobbies available when you’ve got enough of snapping pictures? Air Safaris offers spectacular flights over the Alps.

Other options include participating in a horseback ride, playing golf-cross, a sport that combines golf and rugby, or taking the kids to a game of mini golf. You can be certain that you won’t grow bored.
