The special Dutch fries History

A kermis or fair in Breda 150 years ago introduced the Dutch to fries, and life was never the same again! Many years ago, the Dutch called this snack patatfriet. Patat referred to the potato, and friet indicated that it had been fried. People eventually attempted to shorten the word. In the Netherlands, there is an ongoing debate about the proper name for fries. They call it patat in the north of the country, while friet or frieten (plural) in the south and parts of Belgium.

  • As a side dish: Frites or patat are typically served as a side dish to mussels or mosselen, both of which are popular in Belgium and the Netherlands. Frieten is a regional stew made with horse meat that is frequently served with zuurvlees in Limburg.
  • As a meal: The popular meal named Kapsalon is a frieten tray topped with shawarma meat and cheese. You will bake the tray to melt the cheese before topping it with lettuce, garlic sauce, and sambal sauce. They created this intriguing dish in Rotterdam in 2003 when the owner of a Kapsalon or hairdresser went to his neighborhood kebab shop and requested this particular concoction. This became his standard order, and the restaurant named it Kapsalon after its creator. Every year, Rotterdam hosts a competition to find the best Kapsalon in the city.
