Het Loo: Amazing Historical Palace In Apeldoorn, Netherlands

Apeldoorn’s Het Loo Palace ( Paleis Het Loo in Dutch) is a masterpiece of baroque design in the Netherlands. Many people have given the palace the moniker “Dutch Palace of Versailles” because of its gardens.

1. The palace’s royal history

On the Crown Domain Het Loo, William III ordered the construction of Het Loo Palace as early as 1685. Like previous European kings, he wanted to impress guests by showcasing his wealth and distinction. William and his wife, Mary Stuart, an English princess, were avid admirers of both architecture and landscape planning. As a result, when they came to the English throne in 1689, they had magnificent gardens and pavilions constructed in honor of their new position.

After World War II, Queen Wilhelmina made the decision to spend her golden years at the palace because it was still owned by the Dutch royal family. She retired to the palace upon her abdication in 1948, where she passed away in 1962. Since 1984, the castle has been accessible to the public following major repairs.

Behind the home lies the “Great Garden.” This “Versailles of Holland” garden shows more variances than commonalities. It also has perfect symmetry, an axial pattern with radiating gravel paths, and parterres with fountains, basins, and statues.

Besides, William of Orange was Louis XIV’s continental adversary and head of armies hostile to absolute rule and Roman Catholicism. The canal continues André Le Nôtre’s primary axis at Versailles to the horizon. In his idealized layout, Desgotz extends the axis of Daniel Marot and Desgotz’s Het Loo garden.

The main garden, with rectangular beds instead of more intricately formed ones, is hidden in the woods for private enjoyment, not of a monarch but of a stand holder. A tree-shaded crossing hid the central view at its end. Orange trees in wooden boxes and an orangery also served double service for the House of Orange-Nassau.

Additionally, outside the garden are picturesque streets for pursuing the hunt or enjoying the vista. Few “green rooms” cut into the woods in imitation of Versailles’ cabinets de verdure were ever built at the palace.

Last, the destroyed gardens of Het Loo were rebuilt in 1970 and completed in 1984. Het Loo’s new brickwork, latticework, and embellishments are harsh and will mellow with time.
