Generally speaking, DST DST is the adjustment of the clock due to the season. Accordingly, people will turn the clock ahead when the warmer season is around the corner. Then, when the cold season comes again, they will set the clocks back.

The purpose of DST is to benefit from daylight as we prolong the amount of time we spend outdoors during the daylight period. The months when the clock is arranged ahead and back vary between the Southern and Northern hemispheres.

In fact, DST differs from country to country. Some don’t follow DST as part of their own time zone.

For instance, in the majority of American states, clocks are arranged forward one hour on the 2nd Sunday in March. Then, it will be back on the 1st Sunday in November. Yet, Hawaii and Arizona (except in Navajo Nation) don’t follow DST.

To be more understandable, the clock will be “spring forward, fall back”.

DST History

George Hudson introduced the very first concept of DST in 1895. He is an entomologist who came from New Zealand. Hudson’s interest is to collect insects in his leisure time. He always wanted more daytime hours to catch bugs after work. As a result, he invented Daylight Savings Time.

This idea quickly caught on in other nations. Since this was the period when WWII started to break out, people tended to concern more about saving energy.

For now, DST has been used in more than 70 countries worldwide.

In short, yes! The Netherlands does have Daylight Savings Time. It means that twice a year, the clock is arranged an hour forward or back.

The Netherlands has only one standard time zone which is Central European Time (CET). Another one is Central European Summer Time (CEST) during DST.

This year, DST in the Netherlands began on the last Sunday of March. It ends on the last Sunday of October.

Just like other countries, the Netherlands applies DST to make the most of daylight.

When the wintertime shows up, daylight hours tend to get shorter and shorter. This phenomenon makes it difficult for those who work outdoors such as researchers, farmers, archaeologists, etc. So, changing the clock one hour back offers workers who rely on daylight more working hours in the morning.

In fact, the Netherlands Daylight Saving Time finds its roots in Germany.

In 1916, Germany became the foremost entire nation to execute DST. The following day, the Netherlands followed its neighbor’s lead and began using DST as well.

From 1940 to 1942, German forces, which intruded on the Netherlands in WWII, advanced the nation’s local time by an hour and 40 minutes to fit the clock schedules of occupiers. This action altered the time zone of the Netherlands from the definitive Dutch Time to the CEST.

When WWII ended, the Netherlands got rid of DST but kept CET as its legal time zone. Then, they quit using DST for about three decades and reuse it in 1977. And it stays the same to the current day.
