One of the more isolated regions in the UK—not just in Scotland—is the Scottish Highlands! It’s utterly lovely and truly breathtaking to spend time exploring there. The Scottish Highlands are home to many charming small Scottish towns and villages, many of which are only a short distance from the major roads you’ll be driving. You should visit these ten charming towns in the Scottish Highlands.
1. Killin
In the Highlands, Killin is a stunning town located at one end of Loch Tay. Even though it’s quite small, and you probably won’t stop here for more than a quick pit stop, it’s worth taking a quick look while you’re in the area.
Visit the Falls of Dochart Inn while you’re here; it serves the best fish and chips and is a very authentic Scottish pub.
2. Torridon
As the largest village in the region, it now has a few small bars and places to explore before continuing your journey across the Applecross Peninsular.
Once you arrive, it will be simple for you to explore the local hiking trails or perhaps even go kayaking on the loch.
As an alternative, go for a short drive (10 minutes) to the small fishing community of Lower Diabaig.
3. Shieldaig
Shieldaig, which is west of Liathach and smaller than Torridon, is said by some to be even more lovely than its sister settlement. I’ll leave it up to you to decide, though.
Expect to see many tiny homes, gurgling brooks, and the wild highland environment. After all, discovering the greatest Scottish Highlands villages to visit is part of the appeal.
4. Applecross
You will reach the settlement of Applecross, which is located directly on the coast, just a short distance from Torridon and Shieldaig.
The Bealach na Ba Road, one of the best drives in the UK, is now the main attraction in this area. If you’re travelling from Applecross to Ardarroch, it’s ideal.
5. Braemar
Given that Braemar is one of the Scottish Highlands’ highest communities don’t be shocked if it snows there; bring warm clothing. Well, that is if you arrive during the winter.
As soon as you arrive, proceed to Braemar Castle to have a brief tour of this magnificent Scottish castle that stands so eminently! After that, assuming you’re already headed in this direction, head over to Crathie Church (12 km to the west).
It’s also a fantastic little place to stop by if you’re going to Balmoral Castle, the royal family’s vacation residence.
6. Boat of Garten
The community of Boat of Garten, which is overshadowed by the Cairngorms, is also known as “The Osprey Village.”
Once here, pick up your fishing licenses, hit the hiking trails, and enjoy this stunning region. Oh, and go to Anderson’s Restaurant for a delectable Sunday lunch. It has all the extras!
7. Nethy Bridge
Another village split in half by the River Nethy is Nethy Bridge, which is tucked near the Cairngorm mountain range. Rafting on the river is especially common in this area, which is surrounded by untamed forests.
It’s undoubtedly one of the Scottish Highlands’ most accessible small settlements to visit. That is, of course, if you are already close to the Boat of Garten.
As soon as you arrive, be sure to stop by a few of the trails at the Abernethy National Nature Reserve as well.
8. Cromarty
Even though Cromarty is not well known, it is nonetheless worthwhile to visit.
The small, winding lanes here are ideal for an afternoon of strolling and relaxing yet are sometimes disregarded in favour of other neighbourhoods close by. Even though you wouldn’t go out of your way to go there, it’s still worthwhile to check out while you’re around.
When you arrive, be sure to see Hugh Miller’s Cottage, which is so kitsch and rich in history. Visit this breathtaking location in the Scottish Highlands.
9. Plockton
Plockton is undoubtedly one of the Highlands’ most picturesque communities, as many locals will attest.
The entire village of Plockton is encircled by breathtaking lochs, mountains, and glens that hug the lovely shoreline.
10. Ballater
Ballater, which is renowned as the location to go for hikers, makes a fantastic home base from which to explore the surrounding region. It is also well-known for its spring water, which in earlier times was thought to be able to treat a variety of illnesses.
