The task of creating a comprehensive list of the best travel destinations is thrilling and difficult every given year. After all, there are always inspiring locations and activities we want to check off our bucket lists. Therefore, every fall, when we get together to begin the process of creating this list, we do so with great care, enlisting our widely traveled network of writers from around the world to pitch, endorse, defend, and ultimately align on the destinations we believe that you will most want to travel to over the next 12 months.

The list of the 23 best places to travel in the world in 2023 includes well-known destinations worth revisiting and less-traveled, even once-forbidden, locales eager to welcome visitors. However, they are all connected by eagerly awaited new developments. Whether you’re looking for spectacular excursions into ancient jungles, a burgeoning terroir-driven culinary scene, or dazzling cultural calendars crammed with top-notch music and exclusive art exhibits, there’s something here for every kind of visitor. We also think that more unites than divides these locations, including the chance for more in-depth interactions with residents, slower travel, and deeper, happier personal connections.

British Columbia is known for its pristine natural beauty, from the Rockies to the storm-ravaged islands of Haida Gwaii. New Indigenous-led experiences introduce tourists to the traditions most directly related to the land. Visitors can learn about the Haida worldview of Yah’guudang, which means “respect for all living things and the interdependence that binds us,” while exploring Haida Gwaii at the Haida House, which is owned and operated by the Haida people. The new longhouse-style oceanfront cabins will open in May 2022. Visitors to Haida House will tour the locations of the ancestral villages on the islands, including The Village of Queen Charlotte, which was recently and unprecedentedly given back its Indigenous name of Daajing Giids.

The Indigenous-owned and -operated Nemiah Valley Lodge will open in June in the Chilcotin region of British Columbia. A major judgment gave the First Nation access to their ancestral region, and the lodge is the first tourism venture on Tsilhqot’in title holdings. Sweat lodges and kayaking on Canada’s highest freshwater lake will be added in 2023. Xeni Gwet’in cultural ambassadors will supervise these activities.

Klahoose Wilderness Resort focuses on Klahoose First Nation culture and wildlife viewing in Desolation Sound. On Vancouver Island’s Quait Bay, Ahousaht First Nation will open Tofino Wilderness Resort in 2023. Salmon n’ Bannock, Vancouver’s lone Indigenous restaurant, is launching at the airport, the first Indigenous restaurant at a Canadian airport. Indigenous culture will also highlight British Columbia’s bustling heart.
